Flash Install on GFY.. No thanks..

I am getting a prompt for a flash install when I try to view GFY in IE.. just so I can see an ad when I load the page..

How many webmasters do you think are going to install flash just to see this ad?

Xplicit 10-31-2005 05:41 PM

Fuck this.

its because the flash has to be upgraded.. annoying the way they placed it though.. If you dont choose to install the upgrade it makes a giant broken box the full size of the screen and gfy is way down below

yes, only an ad... only an ad that prevented me from logging in to GFY in firefox. messed up GFY in K-meleon and opera.....

hmmmz, should i trust a sponsor with my traffic if that sponsor uses ads that render msg board useless?.....

Drake 10-31-2005 06:21 PM

Yeah I'm getting it too. That stinks :(

seeric 10-31-2005 06:25 PM

i can't think of someone who is a serious webmaster who wouldn't have flash alredy installed on their computer, at least not any that like to stay in the know.

but anyhow, heres a couple of examples of ones that probably would install it.

ones that want to stay current on the biz and know everything that goes on.

ones that don't think they walk on water.

ones that will look at an ad because one of their own has invested valuable time and creative input to make it happen, and felt that they were supporting the people who the work with daily.

ones that don't think they are above everybody else.

i had a couple more, but i ran out of space. gfy char limit. sorry.

Just to inform you and not to play the blame game, but it's actually a GFY requirement for the flash for a take over ad not from the sponsors.

the problem with the ad isn't the fact that you need flash. As you said, every serious webmaster has it installed. The problem is that the ad messes up GFY if you use Firefox, K-meleon, opera,...

I just upgraded to the latest version of Flash - still fucked when using Opera 8.5, appears to be okay in Firefox 1.0.4.

gotcha.

my initial assumption, (potentially prematurely) was that someone was complaining about advertising on gfy. god forbid if someone paid the BW bill by selling advertising to people who want to know what's up anyhow. :)

i recant my sarcasim and sent the thread to the chief director of academic instruction and managemnt of integrated infrastructural functions at gfy.

my apologies for coming off as it may have seemed. :thumbsup

I believe the GFY staff already fixed the Firefox and opera issue. Are you still seeing issues?

It initially crashed my IE, but after restart it worked (or at least prompted me to install the activeX control - which it did with no problems). Not seeing anything in Firefox (just FYI)
