going from a 17" to 15.2" or 12.1" laptop display
i love my 17 inch notebook, but i travel all of the time now, and saving the luggage space plus the decreased weight of a smaller notebook is very tempting. i'm just wondering if i can go back to a smaller display after several years on a 17 inch...
has anyone here slimmed down their laptop for travel? |
I was thinking about it too. Get a smaller laptop if you know you don't need the big screen. The one I have is kinda heavy to cart around all the time
The Vaio is very nice for travelling. In my opinion a 17" screen is good if you work at home or if you know you are going to stay at some place for a while. But for travelling, a 10" screen is very handy.
I like my 17" one and don't think I could go smaller.
I had 17" on my alienware and then went to a widescreen 15.4 or whatever, drove me crazy forever, but now i cant go back to 17" unless its widescreen, i am widescreen for life now.
For me the question would be can my eyes handle it?
I have a 19 inch desktop and a 17 laptop. I wear coke bottle thick glasses as it is. I looked at the 15 inch notebooks in the store and I just couldn't read the screen. I know what you mean about the weight, a 17 inch is pretty freaking heavy to lug around and its got to hurt when you fly. if your eyes can handle it i would say go for it. |
Love my Vaio 13.3. Perfect size for travelling.
i'm leaning towards a 15 inch widescreen display. smaller and lighter, but not such a huge jump down.
My usual computer is a 15.4" Compaq but I have a 13" Compaq for traveling.
The screen is good but the AMD 64bit low power laptop processors are shit. The screen size is perfect though. I wouldn't go smaller though. |
I made the drop from a 17" to 15" and that was bearable. I don't know if I could do the 12" though, that would probably kill me.

Smaller Vaios are great because Sony has some of the best looking LCDs in the market.
i picked up the dell inspiron 6000 15.4 inch a week ago and i love it. its not too heavy and the screen is awesome
I couldn't go any smaller. And are you really saving THAT much space/weight?
Definitely. Weight is magnified when you are running late for a flight and speeding through an airport. Especially if you do it often.
Size and ease of security screening also go hand in hand. |
I have a 12'' powerbook which I use strickly for travel. Doesn't bother me at all, I love the thing.

Bwahahaha, ya got a point Peaches. I always wonder what the hell do you girls carry in those bags that's so damn heavy... and why did you need to bring it with you for a 2 hour errand!?!?! :1orglaugh |
Do it dood. You'll love it. I went from 17 to 14 and it was so worth it. I travel ALLLL the time. When it comes down to it.. light, portable, and functional is all I care about now.
I've had a 17" powerbook for about 2 years now and although I love the large screen this thing is too big... and it couldn't be any smaller then it is without a smaller screen... Apple made a pretty slim machine. It's a bit much when in a coach seat on a plane or anywhere on the go really. I think i will wait to go to a 15" when I can get a desktop to go with it.
yeah i have a 17" powerbook as well. think i'll order a 15" today.
get a 15.4 widescreen screen
got one and i love it awesome quality |
laptops should be as small as possible...as that is what they are for...
for short term travel work yes i can downsize.
for day to day real work - fuck no - I want BIGGER. |
I have a 12" iBook, and the screen size is no problem.
15.2 for traveling is fine.
17" is not that bad.
The little extra hassle is worth it imo. |
yeah 12inch laptops will make u squint just a bit more.
I just got the Toshiba M55-S329 and its nice and light for travel and the display is gorgeous.

wouldn't want anything else but 14" or 15" unless you want to replace your desktop with a notebook ... hehe 12.1 is getting tiny |
