Sony 5 megapixel camera opinions

I'm thinking of shooting my own content, and have finally settled on the sony 5 megapixel DSC-F707 Cybershot Digital Camera.

Does anyone currently own this camera, and have opinions as to whther it is suitable for shooting content?

I got quite a fat check this month so I'm thinking of investing some money in a digital camera, plus anyway it's not that expensive, merely $742 with fedex 2 night shipment.

Please post your opinions or reviews, I would also like to know the opinions of current content producers, on which camera they use. I'm also interested in getting a digital camcorder to shoot movies, any recommendations, I was thinking of getting the panasonix Dv701.

What are you going to do with a 5-megapixel camera? I shoot all my content at 1600x1200 (2 megapixels) and as it is I reduce it.

Sony uses proprietary over priced memory... that will cost you a bundle. Check out Digital Photography Review before you do anything. You will be glad you did.

I bought it in November. It is an incredible camera. The picture resolution is exellent and the battery life is better than expected. Make sure you get at least a 128 mb Memory Stick though.

If Unseen can take pics with a 2 megapixel camera that come out pretty damn good (check his sig), you might as well just save your thousand plus tax and buy a 3.3 megapixel for $3 or $400.

Theres a new camera technology coming that is gonna make that 5 megapixel camera worth about $150 by this time next year.

I can only highly recommend the SonyDSC-F707. Before we were shooting with the Olympus CL2500 which has 2.5 megapixels and that didn't bring the results we would like to see.

If you would like to see the difference, here are two shots of the same model, the first with the Olympus, the second with the Sony, judge by yourself:

I hate to tell you this, but my Olympus C-3020 took this shot:

which is an 880x image reduced from the original 1600x (2 megapixel) original.

I would compare this favorably to your example from the Sony. The point isn't that the Oly is a better camera, but that all that reserve pixel power is wasted on a shot displayed on a computer screen, and most people will have better things to spend the extra bucks on.

The Sony will produce images more suitable for making large prints (although the Oly can do pics which reproduce very nicely at 8x10).

One thing I like about the Oly is that you can add an extension bar and the FL-40 flashhead and do bounce+fill shots like this one which look for all the world like they were done with expensive (and bulky) off-camera studio flashes and light boxes.

Here is a pic of the same model that Unseen shot only she is not wearing an ugly outfit in this pic. Aaron has said many times that he shoots with a 3.34 mega pixel Epson camera and this looks pretty good to me.

A million pixels. A pixel is a discrete light sensing unit on a CCD, which is the light-sensing chip in a digital camera.

By coincidence, I just read your post after editing the original post to explain that one of the big advantages of the Olympus camera is in the lighting area.

You must have brown eyes or you work for topbucks.... Nobody can convert that much. You could probably make 5 times that amount with a real program!

Hahaha!!!! Well, what's "ugly" in outfits is a matter of personal taste. Pam liked it even if you didn't.

And, in case you don't already know it, while Aaron and I are competitors and live within shouting distance of each other here in Portland, and while we kid each other quite a bit online, we are friends. We had dinner and drinks together two weeks ago, in fact.

I do not have brown eyes or work for topbucks, I just have to commend them on a stellar job, I know pics aren't all that credible but I have no reason to lie, it's cause of this fat check I will be buying the new camera:

Or is it for making that unsolicited and gratuitous plug? At any rate, when you're spending all those bucks for features you'll never use, just remember what it might have bought you to go along with a more appropriate camera.
