Can you have a gun in your check-in baggage?

If you have a handgun (or any gun) can you have it in your check-in baggage if you declare it? I know that you're not allowed to have one in your carry-on, that's pretty obvious. But if you delcare that you have a firearm and have it stashed in your check-in, is that allowed?

Most passengers don't have access to the check-in baggage.

I know it's ok to have a sword in your check in baggage

had a pretty big "samurai" sword, wasn't really a problem

"Firearms carried as checked baggage must be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container and declared to the airline at check-in. Only the passenger may have the key or combination. Small arms ammunition must be placed in an appropriate container: "securely packed in fiber, wood, or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. " Under TSA regulations, ammunition may be packed in the same locked container as the unloaded firearm, but airline rules may differ.

I dunno the laws on this....

2 yrs ago, I was on my way to Cali. when this moron..standing right infront of me, had a loaded gun and 12k in cash! He didn't say shit..then his bag ran under their scanner and BAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Four guys came out of nowhere and threw him to the ground.

When he was put in handcuff's and taken away, he had a look on his face...as if he "just didn't care" rumors were that he and his wife, had gotten into a bad fight
and he grabbed some $$$ and took off. Scary stuff!

My friend's husband competes in gun shows all around the world. He recently was at an international meet, spent the day firing guns, loaded the guns and his clothes into his suitcase and went to the airport. Next thing you know they're sitting on the tarmack waiting and waiting to take off - apparently the dogs didn't like the smell of his luggage (big surprise huh) and they had to hold up everything while they investigated.

Guess he should have washed his clothes before he left!
