Tivo, who has one?

Im looking at getting the 40 hour tivo, who has one and do I need the wireless card for it, would I be able to transfer the movies to my desktop/laptop?

what are the positive and negatives about it?

reynold 10-24-2005 08:48 AM

I don't have one, but my brother is planning to buy one.

Tat2Jr 10-24-2005 08:57 AM

I had a TIVO since they first came out, but switched over to the ones offered by my cable company about 4 or 5 years ago, so can't help ya. If you can get them through your cable company I'd suggest that. I've been VERY happy with the switch. Since it's tied to the cable's guide it will record more accuretly (such as if a show goes 5 minutes over the cable box gets it... TIVO never did).

I don't have a tivo, but I do have a 100hr DVR from dish network.

jimthefiend 10-24-2005 09:04 AM

can be handy, i use mine once a week or so.
got a dvd burner recently thats got a timer thingy on it, i use that more

hottoddy 10-24-2005 09:04 AM

I have a Comcast DVR. No need for Tivo

EroticySteve 10-24-2005 09:10 AM

I have a Tivo brand Tivo and I wouldn't get anything else. The old Replay TVs were pretty good but you have to get an original with the features that they deleted on later moldels.

I have a 40 hour Tivo and it's great. You can use the Tivo desktop to use your TIVo as a media center, you can also transfer movies to your computer to burn them. I have my router for dsl on top of my tv so I just got a usb to ethernet adapter for my tivo. You have to set it up over a phone line the first time though.

The cable company and dish company DVR's aren't as good in my opinion.

TondaB 10-24-2005 09:15 AM

I just recently got a DVR through the cable company and absolutely love it!

We're on our third TIVO. We have the 80 hour TIVO now and has never run out of space. I doubt we could live without it in our house. TIVO company has been great with us. The first one we had, (years ago) did not wear out, the REMOTE did after 2 years of HARD use. Tivo sent us a new one at no charge. We got a second TIvo for another part of the house.

We just upgraded to the new one, it's huge.

If you have Digital though, the Tivo won't work with it until early 06.

You would need TIvo2 to transfer movies. :)
:thumbsup

I have an 80 hour Tivo with a DVD burner. I hardly ever use the thing.

There are tons of newsgroups and sites dedicated to networking your tivo with everything from computers to microwaves...im sure.

MrJackMeHoff 10-24-2005 09:46 AM

Tivo is better because you can upgrade them with new harddrives I have a 700 hour tivo i store movies on. ;)

I Fucked Her 10-24-2005 10:56 AM

Don't have one and don't intend to buy one soon either.

Peaches 10-24-2005 11:18 AM

I've two different ones over the past 3+ years but never transferred stuff over. It's the greatest invention since the microwave though! :)

iBanker 10-24-2005 11:19 AM

I can't live without Tivo anymore. I don't even know what time or for that matter sometimes, DAY the show is on, cause I have it set to record for everything I watch.

I think football is the only thing I enjoy watching live.

Pete-KT 10-24-2005 11:26 AM

Thanks everyone I will be ordering one soon

After Shock Media 10-24-2005 11:33 AM

I also just use the one the cable company provides. Its made by Moxi.

detoxed 10-24-2005 12:05 PM

I have an 80 hour and a 40 hour.

EroticySteve 10-24-2005 12:06 PM

Tivo is worth every penny just to be able to watch NBC shows. I record them come back to them 20 mins or so after they started and watch commercial free.

RainGurl 10-24-2005 12:08 PM

i have 2 80-hour tivos....i transfer movies/shows from room to room, and to my laptop. when i travel, i download a bunch of tv shows to watch on the plane. from what i hear, cable/dish dvrs don't offer anywhere near the amount of features that the tivo does. go for it, you'll love it pete!

NoCarrier 10-24-2005 12:19 PM

Once you have a PVR. You can't go back. I have the Bell ExpressVu 9200 HDTV PVR (Dish 942). 180 hours of SD and 25 hours of HDTV. I love it!

High Plains Drifter 10-24-2005 12:34 PM

Its really difficult to explain DVR to non-tech people, but once they've used it, EVERYBODY realizes how cool it is and how much time you save not watching commercials. Along with the Ipod/mp3 player, its the best tech "invention" of the last couple of years.

AmeliaG 10-24-2005 12:56 PM

I heart my TiVo. I'd recommend getting the 80 hour with DVD burner if archiving stuff is an important feature for your taste.

JuiceMonkey 10-24-2005 12:56 PM

I have one
it's the only reason I watch tv..

Evil Chris 10-24-2005 01:08 PM

DVR machines are the absolute shit.
I don't know what I did without it.

Holly 10-24-2005 01:29 PM

I have an 80 hour one and I love it. I never even watched TV before, except cable news and A&E. Now I'm hooked on half a dozen shows because it just records this shit for me because it thinks I'll like it. Currently I watch:

Breaking Bonaduce
Lost
Invasion
Grey's Anatomy
Nip/Tuck
Two and a Half Men

I never watched any of these until last month, so I'm a little behind on some. The best part is, it takes about 30 mins for the one hour shows and 15 mins for the half hour. I won't even watch TV with commercials anymore, lol.

AcidMax 10-24-2005 01:31 PM

I have one in every room of my house. Wouldn't ever go back to NOT having one. It's nice when you just want to step away and do something, you don't miss your show, just save up some time then blast through the commercials. I even have and HD Tivo :)
