WTF Makes Google So Popular?

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=aLGzp7N3ccb0

Google is reaching $100 Billion in value.

WTF makes Google such a money maker? What happened to Yahoo?

What if a new search engine emerges or 'can' a new search engine emerge to give Google a run for it's money?

adultchica 10-22-2005 08:34 PM

Cuz they have a catchy name? :-)

It was one of the few SEs that weren't crippled by SE spam back 1998-2000. I remember the initial buzz about it... "WHAT?! Search results that are actually relevant???" lol

skinnay 10-22-2005 08:37 PM

google is its own competition

Fuck it, if that's all then what's stopping everyone and their cousin from doing the same?

I remember in the old days guys making adult search engines like there was no tomorrow just in case adult sites were banned from main SE's. I guess the main SE's realize their traffic would drop like a rock if they banned adult sites?

I agree. I like the old SE procedures before they became commercial spamalots.

Absolutely. SE results were useless back then. There was a short period where Hotbot (!) gave the best results.

reynold 10-22-2005 08:59 PM

There are only two SEs I know; Google and the others.. :winkwink:

All the reasons listed plus smart strategic business lines and they are brilliant at managing their bottom line ..still...I like yahoo. I just can?t seem to find what I'm looking for at Google :disgust

Well, Google's technology was one of the few that used links re ranking relevancy. Of course, we're several generations from their first version but you have to admit--they're search results had consistent quality.

There are some things in the works re custom search results :)

Interesting I can remember that I heard about it from word of mouth and that it gave the best results out of any search engine. I went there and that was it. I would have to say it is the relevance of the searches that set it apart also not portal like and having no ads that really made it stand out. They more or less wanted the search to be good vs hundreds of as on homepage like yahoo and msn. I never go to those sites becasuase of all the ads ...

I don't remember ever being so impressed by a search engine :)

We've all missed the most simple and best reason why Google is the SE of choice over Yahoo:

Just type in their URL and you'll see. You type in google.com and you get Google.com. You type in Yahoo.com and you get shit all over the fucking place. Google is simple, no need to scan through tons of shit to find the search window. Google, you just show up and you're ready to go.

Yahoo died from bad design.

Greg B 10-22-2005 09:46 PM

Matter of fact, if Yahoo switched to just a plain interface they might beat google down.

Shaze 10-22-2005 09:47 PM

Google became the best because it caters to the computer geeks. their technology and innovation is far superior to all the other SE's in my opinion. whenever they come out with new products it is something innovated and not copied like most other SE's. also, they open up there technology to developers and programmers through API's which no other SE did. and the list goes on..........

i can personally say these are the reasons i like google....i'm a techie myself and find these what keeps me coming back to google and staying interested in them.....hopefully they stay that way after becoming a public/corporate company.
