Hockey fan? Well then fuck Dish Network!

Dish Network dropped the OLN channel from its lineup, in order to make more money by selling its sports package Center Ice to its subscribers. Thats means if you want to watch Hockey and you're a dish network customer, well too bad.

I dont think its right that someone who is already paying for satellite tv, should have to pay more for a premium service to watch Hockey, when the OLN channel already had it. Dish Network is just greedy and trying to squeeze every cent they can get out of thier customers.

Dish network dropped OLN which had hockey games for free, in order to sell more center ice subscriptions. Thats fucked up. If someone is already paying for satellite tv with OLN on it, why should dish network drop the channel, take the hockey games away, just to get people to pay an extra $129 a month to see thier favorite team play.

I'm sure the average construction worker/office guy/whatever doesnt appreciate being pissed on like this from thier satellite provider. An extra $129 a month just to see hockey cant be justified by most average working people.

Sosa 10-21-2005 10:08 PM

are you sure that is $129/month for the center ice package or $129 for the year?
I have DTV and buy College Game Plan for the year which is $100, and MLB extra innings for the year which was like $160.

Oh for sure, I hear ya. I was kinda surprised when espn made their decision to bail. Its also not 129 a month, it's 129 for the whole season and the first 2 rounds of the cup. 129?, shit I wouldnt spend it, if that were the case. But for 129 you do get a fuck load of hockey everyday. I never watched OLN so I didnt miss it, but I see them as trying to take advantage of the diehards, but turning off the occasional fan that would tune in. :2 cents:

ESPN did not bail - after the lockout ended they offered the NHL a deal - a revenue sharing deal. The NHL took what they think is a better deal from OLN for more guaranteed cash.

doh.. I thought it was $129 a month... ok i was wrong about that, but still... why turn off the whole channel just to get people to pay extra to see something they were already offered in a basic programming package.

cause the diehards *cough cough* will jump on it. I saw 40+ games a week and the first 2 rounds for 129, I couldnt grab the phone fast enough. :1orglaugh Although I think they knew the diehards would be back regardless, they are alienating the casual fan, that would occasionally watch but still be exposed to all the advertising. How many games on average did OLN run?

Because Dish isnt doing it to sell more Center Ice. They are doing it because OLN is trying to screw cable providers into giving them status on the basic cable tier alongside ABC and NBC. In order to do that they have to raise prices and dont feel OLN is established enough to warrant that for their customers. OLN is trying to use the fact they got NHL to hold cable providers hostage and Dish is fighting them instead. Wanna bet OLN caves and is back on the air within the week. They cant afford to lose 12 million people.

The reality is that Oct 10th-11th OLN blackout'd the games to all viewers on cable companies that have their channel on a tier. They screwed over the NHL fans week #2 all in a power and money hungry struggle to get first class status from a 3rd rate channel.

Dish has done this before to channels like MTV and such and won the battle.

OLN does games every Monday and Tuesday nights. But your not missing anything the production is horrible. Shaky and tight camera work, poor lighting, they run the score and time on the botton left of the screen which blocks out the puck on the bottom boards the majority of time. They really didnt do research or put in effort to get things right.

Then they blacked out the game to 90% of the people that get the channel for the Oct 10th-11th games to try and force the cable companies to give them basic cable status. I am glad Dish is fighting back as I was livid when I went to watch Pittsburgh play and had to watch the Top 25 worst jobs because they were trying to extort the cable operators.

The reason why I got back to my old cable distributor

Jennyfer 10-21-2005 10:54 PM

Kevsh 10-21-2005 11:16 PM

OLN's opening night numbers for NHL hockey ... a whopping 0.0 share!

Agreed. OLN can't shoot hockey for shit. CBC still rules the roost for best hockey production value, although TSN is finally starting to get up to speed.

Now if they could just get some guys doing the play by play that don't sound like they popped valiums before going to the rink... :disgust

GO HABS GO!...

We rock.....

Oh and about outside hockey...last season, there was one game outdoor if I remember well ?? Habs vs. oilers.... but Im guessing weather condition is the main reason....
