How much should I charge for building free sites?
 

Someone contacted me for doing free site work. She wants me to do the resizing of the images, the descriptions, etc. What is the normal going rate for this? I've only done free sites for myself, and not for someone else. Please be honest in your answers. I really need an experienced person's advice on this. I told her i'd be willing to do it because I have a lot of free time as it is (as you can tell, I'm new to GFY only one month and already have over 600 posts LOL). She doesnt' want me to do the submitting. She showed me a sample of her site's content (it's unique) and so what should I charge? She wants me to start possibly next week. And how does it work? Is it etiquette to get paid before, or after? Thanks for any replies in advance.

Charge it hourly for what you feel you are worth.

Well take how long it takes you to build one for yourself in time, add in 10 minutes as a correction buffer. Then multiply that by the hourly wage you would want. If your unsure of the hourly wage you would want, take your current hourly wage, or the wage you last had when you were employed and give yourself a 20% raise.

Thanks for the advice. At the rate that some people are doing it for, it sounds like my time would be better spent making more free sites for myself :-). I didn't realize people did it so cheap. I'd make more than what they do it for by making one and hosting it myself. I should have known better.

I don't even know where she got my contact info though. I guess she saw one of my galleries on the HUN and followed one of the links to find my info, I have no idea.

The only other way is assemble loads of image sets, set up scripts, loads of templates and "word files" to generate sensible text and let scripting run them off at one a minute. Tho this has to be setup 100% right for the end-product to have any sense and not be spammy.

If you already have someone who is ready, willing and able to pay you, the answer is dirt simple, as much as you can get.

These days, free sites are so simple and so common, that they are usually scripted and are not usually made by hand any more. Those days are long, long gone.

Personally, I do 7,000 - 10,000 at a time - takes me about an hour.

Right now I have over half a million pages indexed in pretty much all three major Search Engines.

But as I said, get what you can, it's a lost art.
