Light Quake Strikes Southeast Of San Clemente Island

Tremor Not Related To Quakes On Monday, Tuesday

POSTED: 6:46 am PDT October 19, 2005

PASADENA, Calif. -- A light earthquake struck early Wednesday in the ocean 19 miles southeast of San Clemente Island, the Caltech Seismological Laboratory reported.

The quake struck at 1:51 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.1, said Caltech seismologist Nick Scheckel, adding it was an aftershock of the magnitude 4.9 temblor recorded in the same area at 2:11 p.m. Sunday.
Officials in public safety agencies in more than a half-dozen coastal cities in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties said they had received no reports of injuries or damages in the aftermath of the quake, and National Weather Service meteorologists said it generated no unusual wave activity.
Caltech placed the epicenter at 48 miles west of Mission Beach and 49 miles south-southeast of Avalon, where a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department employee said she felt only very slight shaking.

The quake apparently was not linked to the light shakers that struck near Cabazon, north of Palm Springs, Monday night and early Tuesday, Caltech reported.

with the recent activity you guys have had, you better prepare for a big one. I've seen a few posts over the last few days about quakes in Cali.

I took ambien last night (which I rarely do) so I wasn't sure what was going on.

I slept in my helmet as a precautionary measure.

If Cali is earthquake plagued, aren't we always going to have them? And who knows when we are going to have the big one, seismologist can't predict that yet can they? I say don't worry, we've always gotten little trimmers here and there, didn't necessarily mean we were going to have the big one.

I agree, not to worry, also, tremors being related to larger ones is still shakey science at best.

People always predict the big one. I have never understood why. If someone can pick the month, I would be impressed; but predicting a general "big one" is not a stretch, we are on the pacific Ring of Fire. Odds are always in their favor :)
