what is a proxy?
and why do people want them... how do they use my proxy...if I have one?
~Ray |
It's kind of like a middle man between your connection and a connection to something else.
You --> Proxy --> Site The site will see the request come from the proxy and not you. There's more to it than that, but that's kinda it in a nutshell. |
Proxy
A gateway that relays one Internet session to another. anonymity |
proxy
The written authority to act or speak for another party. Proxies are sent to stockholders by corporate management in order to solicit authority to vote the stockholders' shares at the annual meetings. :winkwink: |
thanks. why do people want lot's of proxies?

socks proxies are used for mailing and proxies get RBL'd so you need lots of proxies to continue hitting the inbox. |

Just because I know what proxies are used for sometimes doesn't make me a poor traffic trader. That's like saying just because I know how to kill a person would make me a murderer. :winkwink: |

so using a proxy I can vote for my site on a toplist or something and then change proxy and vote again and again and again and again and again and again...
Would this work for expensive adsense ads on sites too. /Takes her blackhat off now/ |

In other words.... hope you dont meet psili in a dark alley. |
Actually, when the bandwidth was too expensive and connections were not that fast, people made proxies because they wanted to cut from the bandwidth usage. When you use a proxy, the pages you visited are stored in the proxy and the next time you visit the same page, you call the page from the proxy instead of calling it from its original location on the net. Until the proxy server is cleaned you keep getting the same page even if the page has been updated. So one person visits a page , proxy stores it and all other people call that page from the proxy which means they do not use bandwidth.
and yes it is used to cheat on location and hit quantities aswell. BUT with the new technology you can see if an IP belongs to a proxy or not. So I believe it is not a big deal anymore.... A smart webmaster will find out that you use a proxy and will not hesitate to block your account :error |

in my experience proxies are for spammers.. ive seen hardly any other use for them.. basicly they're just used to stay annonymous.

Strongbox sends me these all the time, so all I know is that I don't like proxies.
This is the Strongbox webmaster notification system. Someone tried to login as "XeCTkEsc84" from an open proxy IP. Open proxies are typically used for brute force attacks or other nefarious activity, so this IP address is suspicous. Because it could be a legitimate user I didn't block them outright, but I'm watching them especially closely. If I see anything else suspicious about them I'll suspend them and email you. No action on your part is needed at this time. You can get more information about this by looking at the reports for today, if you have the reports and member management module. |

It's a US deviation on spelling of real English - a derivative of the word poxy, as in "What shall we do with the poxy sailor?"
Forget all these garbage posts above - Tat2Jr is right about StrongBox - they know a sexually transmitted disease when they see one and send an email. |
