Thunderbird from mozilla has GREAT filters. I hardly ever have to deal with spam other then deleting everything in my junk folder every couple days.

Best spam filter on the market is Gmail

Setup a gmail account
Have all your mail forwarded to it
Forward your gmail account to a new email address
Set the reply to on your new email to the old address
.. now you have a backup and some of the best filtering IMO available

Cloudmark is the best. It uses P@P to always ad new spam from other people mailboxes. Also is used by paypal to stop phishing. Best of the bunch in my opinion.

I have tried spamassasin and popfile and both are very good at what they do.
That and catch-all email adressess to create aliases and you should be all set.
