Wow this is sad...For those with powerfull video cards..

I installed my Gforce 6800 ORC 256

The video card told me not enough power...? I am running 450W

How much power do I need?

I am running 80GB/1gig DDR/Xfi Soundblaster/Asus deluxe/

kosta 10-13-2005 07:05 PM

450W should be enough - if it's a good PSU.
If it's a shitty one, then it wont be able to support everything.

Why did you buy Gforce Ultra 6800? It's old.
Should have gottent more powerfull one.

Holy shit, just checked ATI.com - they have released R520 chip (X1800 card)

Probably a silly question - does that card require an additional power connector? Most of the higher-end cards require power directly from the power supply, rather than from the bus alone. That card might have two power connectors.

If it does have two, 450W is probably not enough. 480W would be a minimum.

You are right. All 6800 Ultras have dual power connectors (one connects directly to PSU)

But also keep in mind that shitty PSUs can't deliver advertised power. Cheap brand could say that they are 450W but actually produce only 350W. So it's important to buy a good brand.

I have 450W Antec and it handles 6800 Ultra just fine (build my rig a year ago)

But yeah, 500W+ is more realistic nowadays. Especially if you got a lot of stuff inside (good sound card, cdrom drives, good hard drives, etc)

infecto 10-13-2005 07:24 PM

themaltake makes shitty psu.

Antec Cases are the best to go with.

I run win2k on a machine with specs that were available in 99.. and i seem to be doing everything other people are doing... so why all this NASA technology?
