They update every day now - they dont do the old scheduled updates anymore - just changes to filters that cause everybody to think theyve done an oldtime update.

Exactly - Google stopped doing SERPs updates over a year ago on their old schedule - just a fact - the new "updates" are done on the fly and the only thing they update every quarter (or so) now is their fake PR display on the toolbar and their fake backlinks tool. The "new" updates you see touted on the SEO boards are when Google changes the filter settings like they did last month for dupes/scrapers.

depends on what kind of update you're talking about. im sure they're updating something or another 24-7. do you think they just sit around and only do any changes once every few months?

If youre asking abour "real" PR - again - hopefully for the last time - they do it daily - its done on a continuous basis. However - if you are talking about the "fake" PR they put in their toolbar to mislead idiots that try to run linking schemes on Google - they update that "about" every 3 months or so - the last I heard they took a break for the summer so they should be getting around to it soon

Do you really think they can update PR daily? They used to do it monthly, before Florida; now, the net is 10 times bigger, and they have to assign resources to gmail, orkut, adsense, etc.
They do mess around with filters, estimated PR, etc. But they do update PR every three or four months. I agree with the OP, it's been five months now, another updated is due soon.
