Syrian interior minister commits suicide

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - Syrian Interior Minister Ghazi Kanaan committed suicide in his office on Wednesday, officials said, three weeks after being questioned by a U.N. team probing the assassination of Lebanon's Rafik al-Hariri.

About an hour before Kanaan killed himself, he gave a radio interview and ended it by saying his statement might be the last he would make.

Kanaan's suicide came before a report due next week by the U.N.'s chief investigator on his inquiry into the February killing of Hariri, Lebanon's former prime minister.

Shortly before news of Kanaan's suicide broke, President Bashar al-Assad told CNN Syria was not involved with Hariri's death and that he could never have ordered it. Read the rest at Reuters
