Persian Kitty - ByeBye Smokey

Well, I've had an extra week with my persian cat, Smokey (the reason I ended up as Persian Kitty). The cancer has spread from his liver, he's not moving around well, and he's gone very anemic. Even after a large transfusion last week, his red blood cell count is lower than the vet has seen in living cats and his white cell count is sky high. No meds have made a difference and I feel he's telling me it's time to say goodbye.

I'm taking him tonight at 6:30 to put him to sleep. My two previous old cats made the choice for me. This one's hard because he looks at me as tho everything is okay, but I know inside that it's not. I'm lucky to have had 17 years with him.

Sorry to hear that PK - best wishes and happier days are ahead.

You should take the rest of the day off and spend time with Smokey - no need to be no GFY or working this afternoon.

Ace-wtf 10-11-2005 02:35 PM

sorry to hear that

Anna_O 10-11-2005 02:36 PM

Sorry to hear about your loss, PK :( But, as you said, at least you got 17 wonderful years with him. He will come to a better place now without cancer :)

poppet 10-11-2005 02:36 PM

I'm so very sorry, PK. He's been lucky to have had you for so long. *HUGS*

sorry to hear that, he looks like a great cat.

xlogger 10-11-2005 02:38 PM

17 years.............

wow that like having a kid.

Sparks 10-11-2005 02:39 PM

That's too bad. It's always hard losing a pet you have had that long. My parents just put down the dog I grew up with. Sorry for your loss!

Tat2Jr 10-11-2005 02:39 PM

That makes me want to cry.... Other then a guinea pig, I've never had to make that choice. I'm very very sorry for the choice you have to make, but just know that you're doing the best thing for him. I'm honestly choked-up right now.

After a short grieving period the best way to get on with your life is to go save another senior cat (8-10 years old) from the pound, as they are very hard to place.

Dennis69 10-11-2005 02:39 PM

Sorry to hear that PK... I have a 13 year old dog and she is starting to get pretty slow and I know I'm dreading the day I have to lose her. They become a part of the family!

Scott McD 10-11-2005 02:40 PM

Sad, but there will be no more suffering at least.

If i could have changed the way i lost my cat, and had her put to sleep, rather than be killed by the mindless morons around here, i'd have jumped at the chance.

So although you are sad, at least you had many good years with your pet, and have a chance to send her to sleep peacefully. I wish i had that option...

:(

RRRED 10-11-2005 02:40 PM

PK so sorry to hear that! That is one of the hardest things to deal with in life. And such a special kitty who doesn't even know they are part of history too!

How sad you must be :helpme

My condolences, I know how hard that must've been. Here's to memories, take comfort from your 17 years PK, they'll help make it easier :)

Donny 10-11-2005 02:49 PM

I don't envy the time leading up to 6:30, the minutes when you're there waiting, or the time afterward. But I can imagine a little how you must feel. Just know you're doing the right thing. I don't really know what else to say.

adamneve 10-11-2005 02:50 PM

I am so sorry, I had to take the same decision two months ago. My cat was almost 16 years old. :(

I know how you feel right now. It's only going to be a goodbye..

Obviously you've never loved anything, and been faced with a choice like this. Having a friend for 17+ years???? You'd be second guessing yourself as is, and the grief of losing a pet can be totally crushing.... no one needs to hear that crap. I mean, come on.... you can't tell me you don't know that comment was outta line? Let's not turn this thread into the normal GFY "I can be a bigger ass then you" competition. I got no beef with you, so please don't stalk me around GFY, but that comment was totally uncalled for.... and I'm sure you know it.

GTS Mark 10-11-2005 03:10 PM

Sorry to hear it PK :(

I had to put one of my cats down a few years ago and it was very difficult for me...

Sin 10-11-2005 03:12 PM

So sorry to hear that PK, its never an easy decision to make. It sounds like you tried your very best to explore all the other options though, my thoughts are with you.

sonofsam 10-11-2005 03:13 PM

sorry to hear that pk... i don't know what its like to lose a pet but i've lost a friend and after 17 years with your cat i'd imagine it would be just as hard... wish you all the best.

Peaches 10-11-2005 03:13 PM

Sorry to hear PK. :( All my pets are getting up in years - 9 to 12 - and I dread when the time comes to make decisions like you're having to make. Just know you loved him and gave him a great life.

17 years is a long life for a cat though, I am sure he had a very good life.

Maybe that's the reason why veterinarians can do it legally. This is GFY, you can act like a dumbass if you want. But show some respect in this thread. Maybe it's too hard to understand for people like you, so you should just go away and come back in a couple of days.

BluMedia 10-11-2005 03:21 PM

So so sorry to hear that. I could not imagine losing a pet. I am glad Smokey had a long life though, 17 is a long good life for a kitty. Smokey also is a little famous since he is how you got the name of your site. Very sorry for your loss. :(

Mark

Tipsy 10-11-2005 03:23 PM

My thoughts go out to you. I had to take one of our cats to be put to sleep a few years ago after his liver and heart decided to stop working properly and no amount of drugs could help :( It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do :(

ThumbLord 10-11-2005 03:25 PM

Very sorry to hear that. I could not imagine losing our pet.
Although it is just "a rabbit" he is really a part of our family, 13 years of age, just did spend another 543 Euro's for surgery ( teeth problems and cancer ) and I could not care less, my son ( aged 9 ) trully loves his "stampertje"
