Is it safe to ship an external harddrive with 80 gigs of porn from canada to the US??
I'm currently downloading 20 gigs of content i bought... now i need to edit it and upload it to my server... but my upload speek is capped at like 40kb/sec .... i am NOT gonna upload 20 gigs now and over 80 more later at 40kb/sec... is it safe to just put it all on an external harddrive and ship it to my host for them to put it on my server? or is there anything wrong with that??
I live in canada and my host is in the US.... is customs gonna seize it or is it cool? |
they hook up harddives and check them?? just package it as if it were brand new....

why would it even be a prob???

You should be safe... and like it's needs to be said, but... make sure you have back ups.

Custom agents in many countries, including the U.S., can and do cease content they deem obscene when they come across it when questioning someone at a border crossing.
Shipping is definitely the safer way ... and as the poster above suggested, just pack it as if it's new HD and it should sail right through - they're too busy looking for bombs, drugs, etc ... not reading HDs ... and even if they ceased it (extremely unlikely), they'll just impound it (or discard immediately if they think it's a bomb, etc) and mail the intended recipient a standard form letter. Transferring data via the net is by far the safest way whenever possible ... What kind of editing are you doing ... very specific edits or batch type stuff? Bulk resizing, watermarking, etc can all be done server-side saving one much time and hassle of downloading, uploading, etc. In regards to getting the raw content to the server to begin with ... that's a cinch if you have SSH - login and FTP over the content direct from the content provider. Lastly, it may be worthwhile to upgrade to a faster home connection, if available - many cable and dsl providers have business plans that offer speeds often twice to three times as fast. Ron |

and judging by the responses... looks like its okay thank you all for your feedback, and a huge thank you to ron for putting that much time into a reply :thumbsup |
Put a big EBAY sticker on the package. They won't fuck with it because they'll think if they fucked it up the receiver of the package would sue them.

? but seriously, thanks i'll do that :thumbsup |
Mail it through FedEx or UPS since they are not government (USA) owned... it will still have to go through customs, but should be safer.
I do not see why you would have any trouble as long as the content is legal in the USA. |
Mark it "Repaired Hardrive."

Definitely use FEDEX if you want no hassles. UPS is worthless.
