anyone use "vonage" phone company?

I was checking out this site http://vonage.com/ and was wondering if anyone is currently using this phone company and if so are you happy with them?

thx!

I use SunRocket for my business phone. Besides it eating up my bandwith a little...its great.

The online control panel is great...I can forward calls, block and forward particular numbers, listen to my voicemail, access a full featured call log, and a bunch of other stuff.

I don't think I'd move my home phone over just yet....I'm getting outages and errors every now and then and I here its not too different with Vonage. But then again you can't beat $199 for the year (SunRocket)

I have used Vonage for almost two years and it is mostly great - except for a few inherent flaws.

1. If you go out of town and for some reason your broadband provider drops - no one can call you nor do they get a voicemail - just a stupid message saying the number is temporarily not working. And there is no way to restore it except for waiting for your ISP to come back online. Stupid in my mind - should at least have a way to divert calls to a voicemail system.

2. If YOUR power has an outage (if longer than what your UPS can handle) and you are out of town and the vonage "box" takes a dive then the same thing happens to your line as I described in #1 - problem is that now you have NO way of doing a manual reset and your telephone line will be out until you can get back home and reset everything.

3. Imagine the two things I described above and envision that ANY of your broadband connections (Cable modem, router or similar) goes down - now you are without a phone line that works when you are out of town.

Before Vonage or anyone else comes up with a solution to these issues VOIP will not be perfect. Its good, but not perfect.

Bill is nice and low though.

:2 cents:

I have been for a few months now (Vonage Canada) and it works great! The sound quality is the same or better than my cell phone, but way cheaper.

I got so annoyed by this just now (see post above) I went into the feature list in the admin panel and found this:

"Provide the default telephone number you want your Vonage phone to forward to in the event your Internet connection is disrupted. When completed, click on the Submit button. To clear the Network Availability Number, click the "Remove" button."

So shame on me for not noticing earlier. They must have added this lately or I might just be blind. Scrap my post above.

:Oh crap

Sun Rocket at least forwards to Voicemail when no connection is available.

billywatson 10-07-2005 09:52 AM

If you internet goes down, there's a feature in Vonage that allows you to FWD your calls...it's only happened to me once.

Vonage rules.

I forward all calls from my former business partner, and an ex-girlfriend to the dating rejection line. They probaly think I went out of business :)

LoriAnderson 10-07-2005 09:54 AM

My internet provider also is offering phone as well " wideopenwest" Im looking into that as well.

Ive heard from a few other people that say vonage sometimes isn't as clear..

glad to see the ones that are using it don't have any problems :)

Vonage kicks ass! I am in Europe but have a New York number on Vonage so all of my calls to the US are free and the same for anyone who calls me from the US. It literally saves me $100s per month and the service is quite good. :thumbsup
