Is this a long weekend for Americans too?

Monday, Canadians will be celebrating Columbus day, which is a little bit like Thanksgiving for Americans. Since Thanksgiving is in November, I was wondering if you guys have a long weekend.

Lifer 10-07-2005 07:57 AM

When I was a kid we used to get Columbus Day as a school holiday.

But they ended that a long time ago

Thanksgiving is still my favorite holiday though.

We have a lot of turkeys in Germany, but they are not the eating kind. You can't find a Butter Ball here either. :(

Actually, it's the other way around. Yes, monday is a holiday in the U.S.

Canada = Thanksgiving

U.S. = Columbus Day

Thanks for the infos but that means that Americans will also be celebrating on the 24th of November, which will be, according to my agenda their Thanksgiving day?

In the U.S, Thanksgiving is in November. (fourth Thursday)

Columbus day is a different holiday and it's not about "Thanksgiving". I think you are confusing the two.

Columbus Day October : Honors Christopher Columbus, traditional discover of the Americas. In some areas it is also a celebration of Italian culture and heritage.

Thanksgiving in November : A day to give thanks for autumn harvest, marks traditional beginning of "holiday season."

Well, they are lucky. They get to have another day off in November :smokin

columbus day is just another big lie. he didnt discover nothing. this country was already inhabited by the likes of cochise, sitting bull, gernimo, etc. thanks to the likes of columbus, the native american race barely coexists anymore. columbus was nothing more than a genocidal butcher. never even set foot on us soil. what he did actually set foot on is an island south of florida we now call haiti/dominican republic. wasn't til years later that after he exploited his so called finds that the colonists came over to finish the butchering. besides, lief ericson "discovered" the american continent many years prior to columbus even thinking of sailing. He wasn't given the credit he deserves because his superiors & fellow countrymen thought he was nothing more than a drunken fool with tall tales, however, in canadian provinces, archeological evidence proves that he did in fact set foot on north american soil LONG before columbus. time to reeducate america & tell them the truth. You dont hear anything at all about vikings killing natives.
