Political coupe over internet today, UN mandates in Nov., U.S. loses internet control

Looks likes it's happened. Oddly enough countries that had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of the internet now will have a part in it's control. The EU amongst them. Do you think the press will pick up on this? Do you think Bush will go down in history as the president who lost control of one of the greatest, world changing creations, ever made by the U.S.? What's your take on this?

"You would expect an announcement that would forever change the face of the internet to be a grand affair - a big stage, spotlights, media scrums and a charismatic frontman working the crowd.
But unless you knew where he was sitting, all you got was David Hendon's slightly apprehensive voice through a beige plastic earbox. The words were calm, measured and unexciting, but their implications will be felt for generations to come.

A number of countries represented in Geneva, including Brazil, China, Cuba, Iran and several African states, insisted the US give up control, but it refused. The meeting "was going nowhere", Hendon says, and so the EU took a bold step and proposed two stark changes: a new forum that would decide public policy, and a "cooperation model" comprising governments that would be in overall charge.

But the refusal to budge only strengthened opposition, and now the world's governments are expected to agree a deal to award themselves ultimate control. It will be officially raised at a UN summit of world leaders next month and, faced with international consensus, there is little the US government can do but acquiesce." FULL STORY

although the creation was u.s. made , the internet is "the world" , letting the u.s. control it will run into problems ( i.e. the biggest propoganda machine available ) The u.n. seems as good a choice as any ..

The internet is a worldwide tool and need to be controlled by every country.

That way it can't be censored ...

ICANN is almost a gov organisation ... and it shouldn't be.

These countries don't even have a decent infrastructure for the net.. yet we're supposed to give them control of it? Africans who aren't even self reliant as a nation, is supposed to have control of the net? The EU? :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :pimp :pimp
