Stevie Wonder might regain his vision

New microchip technology would make it possible for blind people to regain
vision. Stevie wonder enrolled to a test program to which this new technology
will be applied...... :2 cents:

His music will suck if he does.

Phoenix 10-05-2005 05:36 AM

sweetcuties 10-05-2005 05:43 AM

I hope so, great news... if anyone deserves sight it's him. He's a living legend

PixeLs 10-05-2005 05:54 AM

Well on the serious side, I think that's a very good news for those who haven't seen light for years.

mardigras 10-05-2005 06:05 AM

From what I understand the microchip will provide a rudimentary form of sight which will allow them "see" shapes. While that would be great for walking around a room I don't think they will be giving the first chip recipients a driver's license anytime soon :upsidedow

Thats no good will make pictures like this useless!

You obviously don't live in Florida then. They give anyone with a pulse a license here. Most of the accidents are caused by a blind grandma or some retard kid out cruising. I think the formerly blind have a good chance of driving on Florida roads.

On a serious note. Cool technology.

this could be bad, remember the movie with val kilmer and he regains his site for a moment adn then goes all manic.

This dude has something todo with it :thumbsup

be good news if there was a link attached to it for proof. NO such technology exists.

This is an old article.....ABC news featured an article about it last week I think

I remember seeing something on the news a while back where they had actually done this successfully (not sure if it was a human recipient) but they had some kind of 16 pixel square array that sent signals to the optic nerve. Hope they've improved it, but even that would be better than nothing I suppose.

Stevie Wonder is hoping that a new, pioneering form of eye surgery can restore the sight that he lost at birth. The musician says he hopes to undergo an operation to receive an intraocular retinal prosthesis, or IRP, a device that harnesses the powers of microtechnology to revitalize vision in the blind.

During the experimental procedure -- which has been performed on just a handful of patients in the United States on an experimental basis -- a microchip is inserted into the retina, the layer of cells at the back of the eye that converts light patterns into nerve impulses that travel to the brain. Any retina cells that have not been completely degenerated by disease are stimulated by the chip into functioning again. Images are transported to the chip via a camera that converts the external images into a series of electronic signals. The camera is mounted on a frame that the patient wears like eyeglasses.
