Bush disses Conservatives
 

I see that the conservatives are screaming bloody murder over Bush's Supreme Court nominee. They wanted someone with "proven conservative credentials" and the Prez just thumbed his nose at them. His pick even donated to Al Gore's campaign.

The conservatives partisanship and predictability has completely marginalized them. The GOP big wigs know that they have no place else to go - they'll vote Republican no matter how badly they are dissed after they put them into office.

It reminds me of the way the Democrats treat blacks and feminists. A little bit of lip service during the campaign and then squat once they get elected.

Welcome to the back of the bus, boys.

I've heard the same said about the abortion issue. Repubs don't want the issue to be resolved: If resolved and made illegal, the only thing the christofundies will have left to bitch about is gay people. If resolved and made totally and un-reproachably legal, they can bitch but it won't do a damn thing.

Either way they end up going back to playing records backwards and not out to the polls, costing them that hard, black, cold little 10% or 15% of republican votes that would spell certain doom for the GOP if it wasn't "energized" and GOTV'd.

I'm not so sure on this one. Miers donated to anti-abortion groups after she donated to Gore, and then threw her lot in with Bush and company.

Roberts and Miers are quite possibly what are known as political "sleeper agents". They have been purposely groomed and have deliberately avoided taking stands on controversial issues, while proving their loyalty to their Republican party masters.

I am inclined to think that they will not bite the hand that has spoon fed them for all of these years.

BTW, this may not be the last Bush Supreme Court nomination/appointee.

The Demos did a piss poor job of warning the nation about the potential impact of the election on the Supreme Court, considering that several members were rapidly approaching the age where nature or their own desires would cause them to step down, opening up vacancies for Bush to make his own lifetime appointments.

Personally, I seriously tried to warn people.

You might be right in the long run, but the right wingers sure are pissed right now. They believe (correctly) that they got Bush re-elected and expected to get exactly what they wanted instead of someome who would "probably" turn out to be conservative. You should look at some of the right wing blogs - the posters are absolutely out of their heads with anger.

I suspect Bush's advisors have judged that the Democrats appear incapable of winning an election any time soon, but the Republicans could lose one. Even if Miers turns out to be more middle-of-the-road than the conservatives wanted (which is by no means certain), the Supreme Court has already been shifted to the right. Why risk a further slump in popularity.
