I have to agree, I think this is a horrible nomination. I really liked Roberts and thought he was a great nominee, but I think a Supreme Court Justice should have some judicial experience.

The last non judge appointed to the supreme court to be a judge was in 1965. After that appointment we learned that appellate judiciary experience is important for someone who (gasp!) wants to be a judge!

That is something that still amazes me Squirtit. Where else in the world.. or at least the "civilized" world, would you get so many appointments to positions of relative importance of people with often no credentials, qualifications or valid track record?

Dumping political crap, tho hard to get away from in the US, there are very few countries where public service indivduals just pop up out of oblivion and end up in positions.. eg.. such as "President"??? Duh! Especially when that person has an utterly disasterous prior record in both his short term political career or business career.

I remember speaking with an elderly lady who was a well-known international jurist, (*very* bright and amazingly "level" in all her words), when I questioned the US scenario of the judical system, the response was just a smile. But then followed comments along the lines that there are many good judges within the system, but the system and external elements fail them. An example of an "external element" being the inability of a US Admin being unable/not willing to ratify human rights treaties, - even for their own citizens.

Sure, you would think the basic qualification, especially for a Supreme Court Justice, was 25-30 years on a bench and with a clean track record. And... sure as fuck not any judge who has expressed *any* political affiliations, nevermind working on behalf of one political party! But... it's the US! :1orglaugh

I really understand where you're coming from. I have to say, that after living abroad for the last 3 years I can honestly say that the U.S. system isn't the worst by far. No system is perfect and the U.S. has the benefit of openly critisizing the system and moving for change by public opinion, which is more then can be said for many of the great nations on this planet today.

Living abroad I've also been humbled to realize the U.S. isn't what all of us Americans are brought up believing it is, or once was. It's amazing what a refreshing take on reality you get living outside the U.S.

There is no doubt that Bush and his administration shames America and it's a hard time for us all right now... but nothing runs smoothly all the time and I'm a firm believer that what has been wronged, will be made right by us again, even if it takes us generations to do it. The last think Americans want America to become is another Russia, Germany (past tense) or China. :pimp

It's indivuiduals (judges) in action daily that form the overall impression and there are some very good judges sitting on benches within the US.

Compare that to one I sat in front of within the last three months. I was stunned by the opening comments by this guy which were - "I don't want anything for this and I want that to be known at the outset. When your project is complete, it would be nice to be invited for afternoon tea."

This judge was openly saying he did not want to be bribed??? Gimme a break!! :1orglaugh
