Serious Reply: What bands do you consider to be 'heavy metal"?

digga 10-02-2005 08:59 PM

depends on the metal. if its just blah blah scream scream and cant understand it then no not really. if theres some sort of comprehension then yea usually.

and as long as they put some fucking effort into the goddamn guitars and shit too. just pounding does not an album make. cannibal corpse is a perfect example of this. they just plain out suck. macabre also. then you get bands like killswitch engage that push it lyriclly and musically. thats a metal band.

Apart from classical musicians, you will find the most spectacular musical ability in the heavy metal genre actually. Particularly the progressive metal bands harness awsome talents - guitar/bass players you wouldn't believe, keyboardists that can play the same riffs/solos as the guitars, and drummers that remember 10 minute songs like it was a blues-12 while striking the drums with microsecond accuracy.

My top pick: "Dream Theater". And yes, they are every bit as good live as they are on record. Amazing stuff.

But if we're talking death/speed etc then the quality varies A LOT. Listen closely and you'll see the great talent of bands like Sepultura though (lyrics, music, instrumental ability and execution) although they may appear rough for the inexperienced listener.

Heavy metal to me is anything from Black Sabbath to Slayer. Very wide genre.

If Tool is considered heavy metal, then yes. :)

all music is music. rap has its place but loses marks for sampling and singing over top of recordings at concernts. some death metal shit is horrid as hell, some punk is very unoriginal and repetative. there is shit music in every genre tho.

je_rome 10-03-2005 03:37 AM

hell yeah. I consider metal more music than rap.

I get totally lost on what people consider to be 'real' music nowadays...

emthree 10-03-2005 03:38 AM

Nope I consider it to be loud and obnoxious without a cause.
