"The US FTC has brought charges against adult web site operators Crescent Publishing Group, Inc, for billing consumers for 'free' services.

The defendants run scores of adult entertainment web sites and promote them as a free service. To take the free tour of the site, however, consumers needed to input their credit card details to prove they were the legal age. Assurances were made that the credit cards would not be billed yet recurring monthly membership charges were applied to thousands of consumers. The charges ranged from USD20 to USD90 and amounted to a total of USD188m. When consumers tried to dispute the charges they were met with a variety of charges designed by the defendants to thwart their efforts, including the use of billing names different to the names on the web site, often resulting in the consumer having no idea who was billing them or why."
