Revolving around Truvy's Beauty Parlor in a small parish in modern-day Louisiana, STEEL MAGNOLIAS is the story of a close-knit circle of friends whose lives come together there. As the picture opens, we find Drum Eatenton shooting birds in the trees of his back yard in preparation for his daughter's wedding reception that afternoon. Shortly thereafter, M'Lynn and Shelby (Drum's wife and daughter) depart for Truvy's to get their hair done for the wedding. "Just the sweetest thing," Annelle Depuy Desoto (who may or may not be married because her marriage may not be legal) is introduced to Truvy's customers as her new "glamour technician." While in the chairs, the sour-tempered Ouiser Boudreaux shows up and entertains the assemblage with her barbs. It seems that the only one of the group who truly understands Ouiser is Clairee who is recently widowed and looking for a diversion. As she says, later in the picture, "If you can't find anything good to say about anybody, come sit by me." Filled with humor and heartbreak, these "Steel Magnolias" make us laugh and cry as the realities of their lives in tiny Chiquapin Parish unfolds.

its only "gay" cuz its labeled as a chick flick so therefore, anyone that is not a female and watching that is automatically "gay". what a fuckin cliche'.
if you cant enjoy a movie for a movie, then you're missing out on alot of excellent movies. theres alot of "chick flicks" that you would actually enjoy but god forbid any dudes you know would ever find out. live your life to please others. heh.

yea well i've never seen it so i don't know what it's like, i'm just under the impression that it's gay cuz that's what most people say about it...didn't mean to get your panties all in a bunch over your favorite flick... :disgust

no panties are bunched, no worries. i wouldnt say it was a favorite flick but it ranks up there as a great one for sure. the boyfriend watched it one day with me (i have it on tape) and he actually liked it but REFUSES to say so in front of his brothers or guy friends..i do believe that would classify him as a homo in their eyes lol sad how people judge others on stupid shit such as movies.

everyone claimed that Titanic was a chick flick too and it is to a certain extent but thats only a part of the movie and i feel bad for those who have never/will never see it, i think its a great film for many different reasons.

< / rant > lol :upsidedow

Who is making fun of the movie? Isn't Washington Mutual making fun of Tom? For showing his feminine side to his male friends?

I never saw Titanic because I already knew how it ended.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 10-02-2005 02:46 AM

One of the most boring movies I ever seen in my life.

How about checking things out for yourself and making up your own mind?

NoComments 10-02-2005 05:15 AM

great flick, but fizzles at the end

myjah 10-02-2005 06:11 AM

Very much a chick flick and a little long, but I can never watch it without crying.

Holly 10-02-2005 08:08 AM

:1orglaugh - look what I just put for my quote:
fucking-around-and-business-discussion/522352-quote-day-whats.html

I watched it yesterday on TBS. That movie rocks. I suspect you can't fully appreciate it unless you're a female who was born and raised in the deep South.

Marcus Aurelius 10-02-2005 08:12 AM

Yeah, its one of those movies designed to tear your heart out on purpose. Like terms of endearment.

MandyBlake 10-02-2005 08:36 AM

saw steel magnolias a long time ago. i remember liking it a lot but don't remember if i cried or not. i probably did though.

Sarah_Jayne 10-02-2005 09:22 AM

my friends and I have a rule - watch up until the food starts to over boil and then turn it off. The first half if a funny movie..the second half is depressing.

When they showed it on the BBC at Christmas a couple years ago the people that put together the ratings for tv made it public that most people tuned in just for around the time Leo died and then turned it off.

Dagwolf 10-02-2005 09:30 AM

The preview was better than the movie.
