Serious Question: Do you consider rap/hip-hop to be real music?
"Throw your hands in the air, waive em like you just don't care..."
"Yo, Yo, check this out . . ." "This one goes out to my boys (nignogs)(mammy)etc . . ." "We was up in da club . . ." "Ice, bling bling, back up dat ass, shake it, etc" Is this considered music? |
i think some of it can be considered music. not all of it though...just like most genres.
|
I love all music and I appreciate the artists expressions...so Rap/Hip-Hop would be considered music in my book. Not my favorite but some of it is really good.
|
Some kicks ass. Some sucks.
|
its entertainment, i like rap, but some clowns dont know when to stop.
i dont like to listen to bling bling, i like stories like pac and big were telling. |

Rap is only popular because it's nothing more than speaking in time with a beat...Which requires zero talent to do. That's why it became so popular in the ghetto...Any nignog or trailor pup can do it. |

fucking stupidity is what i think it is. can't stand the shit

Nope.
Don't think it is real music at all. But I also don't care if other people do. Just not my thing. |

and you can go to a metal-concert: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=523058 :D |
It's no more music than painting or acting is music. It's simply a form of expressing oneself.
Some, such as Eminem, is too simplistic to even be called "art". ("With a bling, and a ding, there's a thing, at my door, it's a whore, on the floor, she looks out, for the trout, who's about, in my place, with a daze, on its face") Can't stand any of that crap. Gets on my nerves. |
Yes, it's real music. No, not everyone likes it.
|
i listen to mostly metal and hiphop.. i dig the 90's hiphop more than the new stuff.. and for metal i listen to cannibal corpse, deicide, dying fetus and lots of other heavy fucking metal... but i also listen to music that has vocal, or instrumental talent, from Sade, to Iron Maiden.. i'm a vast som'ob'a'bitch...
but my point is... if you are going to judge one kind of music.. what principles are you basing that judgement upon... for example, if you listen to radio friendly music every day.. you are basicallly submitting yourself to a corporate-scheme to lure the listener in with brainwashing repetative crap.... and then the judgement that you make that hiphop is not music, is merely because it sounds different to what you call music... and yes i am aware that hiphop is very mainstream and the marketing used is very tactical and targeted... and a throng of tibetan monks chanting, humming, whistling, whatever.. when they do it together it is a form of music..... as is any other form of melody that is soothing or hypnotic... anyways.. thats my rant |

It's not real music. I like some of it - very select songs and groups. It's just poetry over sampled music or a looped beat.
It's popular because it's a form of story telling and/or lecturing. It's like listening to a speech or having a book read to you. I think that's why it has become so ubiquitous. Talk is powerful. The rhyming over the beat part just adds to its entertainment value. It's not for everybody though, especially for people who were raised on actual music, with real instruments and singing. They'll often find it hard or impossible to listen to, and that's very understandable. |
It's just plain ignorance
|
Same question was asked about ragtime during the turn of the last century. Questions re 'authenticity' of any cultural expression or product presupposes some linear order or frame of reference. Postmodernism has debunked any such order. Now you have Shakespear right next to Don Delillo right next to Toni Morrison on any bookshelf. The focus now is on rendition and context rather than any Platonic "gold standard." Today's crap maybe tommorow's gold and vice versea.
|
then there is "The Roots" they are very successful, they use all real instruments, they jam like every other band... drums, bass, guitar, and they add synths and loops as well.. thats why some hiphop is good.. it is very dynamic, and allows for alot of new and innovating sounds..
if music didn't evolve, than we'd still be banging pots and pans... and we would love it. |

hes the worst "rapper" since Vanilla Ice. Actually, hes the black version of Vanilla Ice. He sells to the masses, those who believe "gangsta rap" can be danced to as if it was the Thong Song. :2 cents: |

But I don't really think whether it's considered music or not is relevant to its value as an artform or how entertaining or enjoyable some people find it. It's simply a different medium for story telling (sometimes the stories are merely about bragging about one's money). Some people will like the medium, some won't. I think some artists have done fantastic work with the rap thing. Saying that rap isn't music, isn't really saying anything negative about it (although that's usually the intent). It's like saying that Shakespeare or your fiction novel isn't music. Singing isn't music either, it's what somebody does over music that's being played. But I still like Shakespeare and good singers, even more than some music. |
I'm willing to bet Lotus Mike is Stocktrader23/Ninja Scripts... same idiot, different nick

I just finished listening to a new CD I picked up today.
Not a new recording. This was a treasure found in the Library of Congress, at the time uncatalogued. Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane. Just released this week. I think these guys would consider it a waste to piss on rap and hip hop. They would not even hear it. |
I think music is a free industry and anybody can make music the way they want to and its up to the audience if they get to appreciate or not. I like rap/hip hop music but not much a fanatic. Only selected artist.
|
I honestly do not consider it music that takes any talent to produce, same with this Britney Spears horseshit. All the music is computer generated or sampled, which takes no fucking talent, and the lyrics are written by people behind the scenes. It's all corporate bullshit.
|
what's with all the rappers doing the same thing?
every video i ever see of rappers, all doing the same moves with their hands & shit. seems too 100's of them with the same phrases "yo-put ya hanz up" & what's with the illiteracy rate amongst the hip hoppers it's thug's, not thugz it's n.i.g.g.e.r.s, not niggaz it's whore's, not ho's it's the, not da it's that, not dat it's killers, not killaz and even listening to them you can hear it spelled wrong i gits to go to skoo to lean sumfing i gotsta go to da baffroom wanna goada mcdonnews & git a cheeseborger whatchew lookin at yo want summa dis give me a fucking break, the whole hip hop lifestyle is a friggen joke :2 cents: |
yes, the lyrics (of real hiphop that is) are far more divers then poppy rock songs etc. theyre only about 'love'.
Plus the rhyme scheme is far more complex then any other form of music where they only rhyme the last word of each sentence. Rap's got metaphores, multies etc. Again, im talking about good rap and not the poppy shit like chingy. |

Who have you been listenting to? I listen to rap/hip-hop as much as any other genre of music and i have never heard any combination of those lyrics. The fact that you know enough to make some shit up, means you listen to a lot of rap artists that truely are shit. Because turn on your radio to your local rap/hip-hop station and listen for an hour or more, bet you wont here any of those phrases. But then again, what am i doing bring logic and truth into a biased thread. |
The only thing I dislike more than rap/hip hop is country.
I only listen to music on local radio when someone else insists. |
I still remember the first Rap song I ever heard, which was "The Message" by Grand Master Flash... it was definitely real music with a real message. Back then there was a purpose to the music, where they spoke about their experience and about how the music was a release from the everyday crap (See "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang)...
Then some folks decided to make it really commercial... and like R&B and Soul music (great stuff) begat Disco (Ugh!), we ended up with Rap like it is today... A sad state of affairs if you ask me... |
LOL at the thought of webmasters trying to determine what is "Real Music" and what is not.
Is it listed on the Billboard charts? Is it sold in record stores? Does it sometimes play during your favorite movie and then it is listed in the soundtrack? Then yes...it is real music. If you don't like it, or you don't understand why it is considered music...then most likely its not for you. I don't eat seafood but I'm not going to say seafood is not real food. You guys are morons :1orglaugh I don't like Slayer and that extremely heavy metal stuff but you won't see me trying to call it crap or take it away as a form of musical expression. Stick to submitting galleries and sitting on your fat asses morons. Leave society and pop culture decisions to us day walker webmasters who lack the ignorance gene. |
Of course its music. Just because there is a lot of it out there is crap, does not mean its not music. There's a lot of crap country out there, but its still country music. Rap is not music, its spoken word. Hip hop is music, I saw Roots Manuva on Saturday night and he had a full 6 piece band with him, as did Lyrics Born when I went and saw him last. 6 band members on stage and that isn't music? Give me a break.
|
No.
I consider it noise, not music. |
Some of it is music but most of it not. There are a few rappers that could sing an actual song but they're the exception.
When you use the term "whoop whoop" in a "song', you're maybe not the lyrical genius you think you are. |
