Athlon 64 Good for a server?
Just curious the ups and downs on this chip
|
I would like to know that as well,
|
I've run a single chip athlon 64 system (redhat/apache/mysql) and it ran as fast a dual p4 system with the same setup. I'm sure that performance will vary depending on what your app(s) are doing, and if they have been optimized for 64bit processing.

No -- AMDs suck!
Are you retarded KMR? |

Anyways done with broke back to the TOPIC.
A64 Good for server use? why? |
The AMD64 range of CPUs are the best on the market right now.
|
Yes, they make excellent servers.
Especially database servers. Run a 64-bit OS like Ubuntu for AMD64 and load it up with ram (going 64bit allows you to use more ram among other things) and use the AMD64 64-bit optimized code for MySQL and you'll be screamin' along. MySQL is always happy to have more ram. However, whatever you do, stay away from *BSD + MySQL unless you want to take a performance hit. They had some serious threading and/or kernel issues that effected MySQL performance last time we benchmarked. |
