Ok, now about Malcolm in the Middle at BURNING MAN tonight! Hal, Rand, Jack......more
opinions?
i think it wasn't bad. i liked it. i have never attended, but i have always had this vision of it and what it stands for. i don't really think they violated it. it showed that even though you are a "regular" person you can still let loose and have a good time and not feel bad about it. i love that they made the dad into performance art. that was great. they played to alot of the stereotypes that i hear so much about. i think that they put alot of thought and attention to detail into it now that i think about it more and more. i expected a total massacre of something so great. i got to say, as much as i don't want to like it, it was cool to watch it play out and not be disgusted. i guess i will see the year that i am lucky enough to attend. what did you think? |
sig spot :)
|
is that on FOX? we're 3 hours behind ya' airek, we haven't seen it yet. muah!
|
I'm very curious.
It would be like if Malcom went to Mecca. Lots of potential to disrespect. But we shall see. |
im sorry lovers, i didn't mean to spoil anything. i don't think you will be offended. come back later, i'd really like to know what you think. helps me paint the pic. i forgot that you guys dont get it till 3 hours after me. arrrgh. sorry.
|
Shoot I missed that. I wanted to see it.
|
The portrayal was good - over all a good episode

I wasn't referring to the size of the event. But the importance to those who consider it sacred. |

idiot. never ceases to amaze me. nah, you know what, you aren't an idiot, you are rude. thats worse. i'm sure you are intelligent. |

Since you brought it up though, I will say that I find many of your "spiritual beliefs" to be silly at best, "playa". |
well, west coast has it on the screen now, so we wil see.
warchild just needs to learn to identify the tone of the room and respect people who are discussing something is all. i'm sure he isn't a bad guy. btw, PLAYA is a commercial term. there is nothing spiritual about it, so it would appear that you are out of context. no offense. |

I would submit that even taking the time to offer a dissenting opinion is a form of respect to the room and the discussion. Writing it off as childish and dismissing it all together would be the true form of disrespect. Further more, if you read carefully, you called me an Idiot for daring to ask questions in your discussion. |

no one is really upset with you man. this is gfy, but the threads that actually do have some sort of substance to the and not "i'd hit it threads" or worse, or guarded comparatively to a brinks truck full of gold. basically, i guess there are some things that some people take seriously, while others do not. thats no big deal. we are all different. :) |

i think halcyon's over at his computer typing up a long response about the show - we just watched it, so i'll keep mine brief. i thought they did a great job with the topic of burning man considering the audience they target. :thumbsup i love that in the end there were members of the family who 'got it' and those who didn't - it's not for everybody. :) |
Quote:
i really am sorry sweetie. i am not used to posting with this time difference. what did you guys think of the show? |
Quote:
1000% true. i am glad you guys saw what they tried to do. |
well...
first off, I have tried to explain a bit of why Burning Man is spiritual to me here: http://halcyon.lustmonkey.com As for the show, I was impressed. And I thought it was funny. It did not make fun of Burning Man. It *poked* fun of certain aspects, teased some people, but mostly, it showed respect and showed much more than boobies and crazies on drugs. I'm happily surprised. The best mainstream portrayal to date. |

i don't think you have a clue about my spiritual beliefs - and i'm not a player. |

where actually is the threshold of on a groups (less than 100,00) belief being more qualified or appreciated by society than another, or equal to actulally? that is my question. what if burning man was the next mecca in 200 years, 500 years? is that fathomable to people? burning man is very much like mecca. it is a crusade, annually, very, very much like mecca. you may have chosen a bad example warchld?

i thought you would be. i think the very carefully walked the line. the performance art part of it was great. the dad was classic. |

My mistake on the playa reference, I never even stopped to think you meant it literally. I should have, it seemed really out of place and that's why I keyed on it. My bad there. Quote:

I don't know about comparing things to organized religions though. I find all organized and structured religions to be a crutch for the weak. A need to believe in something coupled with an inabillity to think as an individual. I actually have a marked distain for religion. It's the greatest tool the strong use to control the weak. :2 cents: |

haha, i have a similar issue with all the current slang in songs, when a person is referred to as a "playa," i think "how odd, they're a plot of desert salt flats..." i like being silly on the surface =) |

altho i've not managed the time to attend I do plan on it as soon as possible! CEOs of countless large (mostly tech) companies urged their employees to join them to burning man yearly... i would love to be one of those companies

hey hal! whats the story with the guys head buried in the sand? i see this particular piece in a lot of burning man pics. it must mean something. |
I have to say the whole Burning Man festival is a bit much to take in. It's completely surreal for the uninitiated like me.
Human culture thrives on togetherness and commonality, even if that commonality comes from extreme individuality such as at the Burning Man festival. I think that some of it's precepts as I understand them are far more healthy than Western religions which require one to abide by the rules that may or may not make sense. It may be unfair to call Burning Man a religion but it surely is a spiritual event for those who attend. I will have to check it out sometime, just for the experience. |
