being down 3 hours 2 times a year is not bad switches and routers do break other shit happens 100% uptime is overall just hosting bullshit :)

Thanks man. Usually we don't have many problems, and anything that comes up is fixed in a reasonable amount of time. But tonight it's been hours and I have updates and shit to do and it is frustrating to hear excuses. i just want the nox up or a straight answer as to why it's down. Not too much to ask for what we're paying I think.

Webair, and again, there are usually no problems like this, but FFS if something is broke or needs replaced how hard is it to just say that instead of feeding me some line about something the server is doing to itself to make it go down.

3 hours? fuck that! If any of my servers are down for 3 mins i will be on the phone with my host.

Don't want to start a webair is good or bad. To each its own.
But some food for taught: every host its a good host when nothing happens.

3 hours its too much for a fsck, so theres definitely something wrong with it.
if it goes down and up, tell them to bring it up and shutdown all services
till they get it sorted.

your not the only one with webair problems today i bitched at someone a few hours ago that was on the phone ripping them a new one due to a site being down.

Frustrating.

talk to them to give you a straight answer.
if its going to take longer, at least switch dns to another ip, with a low ttl
and setup a temp page, at least you let your members know about the problems
and reduce the number of lost members.

Waiting for tech to respond now for another solution. I'll know the extent of pissed off members tomorrow when I get the e-mails from ccbill about people not able to login, etc. :Oh crap

There is no backups I was just told. This is going to be a long(er) day than I hoped for.

No backup, no ETA. Whole thing will have to be rebuilt I think, I am on standby.

But to answer the question, I hate down time and have owners phone numbers on my cell, and do not hesitate to use it after 5 minutes, no matter the time.

What does a dead hard drive mean? It crashed and all the info is gone?

That question has not yet been clarified, they have asked me to hold on, I'm still holding.

they must do the ocassional backup of your server, even one a week or two old would be better than nothing...

I thought the same thing, and I remember being told that dedicated boxes are on 24 hour backup, but apparently this summer sometime they went to paid backups, and I do not remember getting that memo.

All the data will still be on the drive. For a drive to fail it probably means the motor has died. A data recovery person could get your data back easy.
I've had to do that at work before.
Also I've saved all the data off a formatted drive. It would be very difficult to completely lose all your data unless the drive has been physically damaged.

Well replacing a harddrive in an emergency situation like this should not take longer than an hour. Thats more than enough time to replace the faulty drive and reload a backup or setup a new OS.

For the future i would consider RAID or even better to have a second server in place. Make a incremental backup to it couple of times daily set a low ttl for your dns entries and if something happens you can just switch to the backup server while the main one is being fixed.

All my webair stuff is fine. Sucks for ya Newbreed. Hope its back up ASAP buddy!
