Any secure alternatives to the old fashioned door lock?

I assume most of us still use a key to open their door but i feel like im stuck in the 1800's.

So a gadget minded person like me: with what should i replece it?

Fingerprint? Accesscode? Remote magnetic authentication?

biometric locks are nice, not too expensive anymore these days.

sumphatpimp 09-28-2005 06:07 AM

if you go with something electric, make sure it "fails open".
that is; if the electric goes out you are not locked inside.
this does happen.

every biometric lock has a mechanical backup

What are you trying to accomplish? Most locks are easy to pick. Go Medeco to avoid that issue. Otherwise the mechanism is the biggest fail point. People kick in the deadbolt.

I have confidence in that yes: ive been using biometrics for the computers
and it has not once failed.

I've got a touchpad that requires input of two numbers to open.

It's does such a good job, I have trouble getting in sometimes.

I even authenticate my GFY logon with that ;)

crooks don't go in the door.
they go in the window.

tranza 09-28-2005 08:36 AM

Maybe you should rethink that theory. Most burglaries start with the door being kicked in, ask any home security rep.

MikeyFingaz 09-28-2005 08:41 AM

i dunno, but i got a friend who tried that whole drilling a hole in the floor right in front of the door then putting a stopper in it. that shit works. ya cant bust the door in. i think you would have to get the door off the hinges to get in.
