OKAY WHO IS SMART! Algebra problem....

The number of wild horses at the Lazy Z Dudes Ranch could be found by counting them, but when Hank visits the ranch, he suggests that 23 fewer than five times the number of horses at the ranch is the same as 58 more than twice the number of horses on the property. If Hank is right, how many horses does the Lasy Z have? First define you variable?

Lets see how smart you biatches are?

The Truth Hurts 09-27-2005 09:22 PM

27...........

AmigoPorn 09-27-2005 09:22 PM

5x - 23 = 2x + 58
5x = 2x + 81
3x = 81
x = 27

aflex 09-27-2005 09:24 PM

5n - 23 = 58 +2n

Thumbler 09-27-2005 09:24 PM

I'm impressed - it's over 35 years since I did algebra

skinnay 09-27-2005 09:24 PM

come on its not that hard lol

Elli 09-27-2005 09:25 PM

That one was way too easy.

Thumbler 09-27-2005 09:26 PM

Why didn't you answer it then? :1orglaugh

Babagirls 09-27-2005 09:27 PM

i dont know, i suck at algebra :1orglaugh

Because Amigo beat me to it. There's no point repeating his work.

Good answer - and I can think of a lot of smartass rebuttals, but as you're a lady I won't do :)

The Truth Hurts 09-27-2005 09:32 PM

I use to do shit like this in my head.

i'd turn in my tests with answers only.
it pissed the teacher off, even though the answers were always correct, he'd flunk me anyway cause I didn't show my work... even though I sat not 5 feet from his desk during testing and he could see that i wasn't cheating.

I eventually told him to get bent, and transferred to another class.

Thumbler, we did algebra like that in grade 8. Seriously, it's not complicated stuff. I had to take calculus and trig and stats later on, so single variable algebra is nuffin.

You can count on me when it comes to algebra but unfortunately, I am not that good when it comes to reading comprehension. :(

Exactly. That's textbook. I combined steps 2 & 3 in my cyphering.

Yes, but I was probably in grade 8 before you were born... in fact probably before your father was born. I did calculus and trig and stats as well, but it was a L...O..N....G time ago - doubt that I could do it now.

So.. because you are older than me you suggested that I didn't know the answer? That's just wrong.

How do I know the Lasy Z has horses? I know the Lazy Z has horses but how do I know Hank knows how to count? The Lasy Z doesn't have any but The Lazy Z does have horses.

No not at all, just pointing out that because it's such a long time since I did algebra I had forgotten what a basic algebraic problem it was.

Harley Girl 09-27-2005 09:51 PM

whoa...long time since i've done algebra...yikes!

Great Post BTW ! :)

I was helping my friend?s little sister with her math problem.

27 is my lucky number! :1orglaugh

I didn't expect my known friends of GFY to show up. :1orglaugh I thought all those little punks that talk shit all day would have had the answer. I guess they are dumber than high school. :1orglaugh

So from now on lets refer to the high school students as elementary my dear! :1orglaugh

Hey no sweat I am 18 years older than this whole situation. :1orglaugh

I figured it out and I was blow away that I did. LOL

It's been a long long time since that practice. I was telling this little girl that maybe the problem in front of you won?t matter but the answer will. You will come across shit in your life (I didn't cus) that will suck. But you keep going until you get the right answer. THAT MY FRIEND IS ALGEBRA!

Would that be hot with milk and sugar (the way I'm used to drinking it) or without milk but with ice as people round here drink it (yuk!)?

Um, Tetley Orange Pekoe with one splenda packet and a dollop of 2% milk. :) Hot, of course. DUH.

kristin 09-28-2005 12:08 AM

That was a little too easy : )

27 of course!

keep em coming

quite refreshing

Hey guys! Where do you find such an algebra "tasks"? My son was learing the similar things in 4th class, i.e. when he was 10yo. It's absolutely normal task for 10yo child here in Russia, but... it's very strange to hear it from an adult... IS the US education sucks soooooooooooooo much?

Theo 09-28-2005 04:58 AM

algebra reached the states

i cant hide my excitement :)

Sarah_Jayne 09-28-2005 04:59 AM

*runs screaming from the room at the mention of Algebra*

Exactly. When the questions are dumb like 2x - 2 = 4

I like the guys here. When someone can't solve an easy task he says: "LOL, That's funny!"

MacDaddyPlaya 09-28-2005 06:36 AM

I bet you didn't know it, but The Mac used to be an Algebra teacher.

Let X = the Total Number of Horses

5x-23 = 58 +2x
3x = 81
x = 27

Are you trying to tell us that it is standard in Russia for 10 year olds in 4th grade to be taking Algebra? I find that difficult to believe.

Lee 09-28-2005 06:43 AM

Can I be smart by saying its an Algebraic problem?

On second thoughts Im being a pedant :(

tranza 09-28-2005 06:50 AM

c'mon, it's not that difficult!

I don't trying. I'm telling this to you! Futhermore, afrer 9 class (14yo) our children don't learn algebra at all! They learn trigonometry, stereometry and basic mathematics such as (derivatives, logorithms, matrix manipulation etc)

PlugRush Sascha 09-28-2005 07:01 AM

I'm glad we can all do 8th grade math! :1orglaugh

I can give you some tasks from a school book of my 11yo son (5th class). Let's see how you solve them... :winkwink:

I believe it. Take a look at some Scandinavian textbooks to see what the kids are learning these days.

I don't doubt that at 10 students are beginning to explore Algebra and Algebraic concepts. I do still find it hard to believe that the standard 4th grade math curriculum is an actual Algebra 1 course.

Lol, I'm in community college and I STILL have to take Intermediate Algebra. I failed Algebra in high school and forgot how to do it (it's been a few years since then) so I totally forgot how to do it. Actually I think I failed all my math classes back in high school.

I'm embarassed to admit I can't solve that damn problem on the first page. I hate math so fucken much. Those Russians are damn smart.
