Just in case someone comes across this thread at a later date, I wanted to post some info from our first-amendment lawyer about the 'recent study' cited in the article.
The ?recent study? referred to of course is the notorious Judith Reisman study which was done in 1985 or 1986?obviously not ?recent??at the instigation of Ed Meese?s wife. This is what I had to say about it when the American Family Association started leafletting one of our retails in 1999: I was referring to the paragraphs in the flyer:
7. The ?Reisman Study?--Page 2, 2d Item. The AFA appends an impressive-sounding citation for the notorious ?Reisman Study,? an examination of three adult magazines by former Captain Kangaroo writer Judith Reisman, a person with no experience in sexual research. What the AFA doesn?t tell you is that Reisman?s ?study? has been thoroughly discredited and rejected. The Justice Department, which commissioned it, refused to publish it because of ?multiple serious flaws in its methodology.? (Verne Spiers, US Department of Justice). The American University, which academically housed the study, also refused to publish it, and commissioned an independent study of it by Dr. Robert Figlio of the University of Pennsylvania, who wrote: ?This project, the data gathered and the analyses undertaken offer no information about the effects that pornography and media have on behavior. . . .From a scientific point of view, we cannot take this work seriously to build theory or policy.? Dr. Loretta Haroian, cochair of the plenary session of Child and Adolescent Sexuality at the 1984 World Congress on Sexology and one of the world?s experts on childhood sexuality, said of the Reisman study: ?This is not science, it?s vigilantism: paranoid, pseudoscientific hyperbole with a thinly veiled hidden agenda. This kind of thing doesn?t help children at all. . . . These people are little more than censors hiding behind Christ and children.? (Emphasis added)
