Another well known brand goes to shit.

EroticySteve 09-26-2005 03:02 PM

I doubt that Wal Mart would be so dumb to ruin the brand.

Hilfiger has been on a steady popularity decline for the last seven years.

They moved into the hip hop market and had every celeb wearing their stuff, but in recent years they've fallen by the wayside.

Hilfiger is not going to give up it's premium status. I believe that they'll move upmarket in the department stores. You'll find their premium line to be up marketed. You'll see affordable fashions in Wal-Mart.

This will work well.

tristan_D 09-26-2005 11:52 PM

everything wal-mart touches turns to shit. I hope it wont be this time.

kmanrox 09-26-2005 11:57 PM

shit, now i gotta buy a whole new golfing wardrobe, can't be caught with a namebrand owned by Walmart =(

phonesex 09-27-2005 12:04 AM

I guess bloomies and macy's will stop carrying that brand for sure now.

CybermedAndy 09-27-2005 12:07 AM

Just having the Walmart name attached to a product cheapens it

LOL, turns to shit? Wal-Mart is the most powerful retailer on the whole planet.

They're about to hit the $300 Billion a year range in 2006.

I disagree with that statement, I do however know what you're getting at and if Walmart does buy Tommy Hilfiger, it'll be the end of that brand as we know it. However, instead of Tommy Hilfiger golf apparel they'll be Tommy Hilfiger Nascar gear.

BIGTYMER 09-27-2005 12:32 AM

I'll have to burn all my TH shit... :(

That is why we are all sheep!!! People buy just cause of status symbol and not quality anymore. If the quality is still the same, then why should people even care. If brandname really affects you that much and if it adds confidence to you, then you should really think how strong of a person you really are.

People should buy clothes based on look, quality and style instead of paying a 1000% markup just for a brandname. People are buying into all the marketing and who knows how much the stars are getting paid just to wear their clothing lines.....

pr0 09-27-2005 01:47 AM

tommy said, "if i knew all these ghetto hood rats were gonna wear my clothes i would have never made them"

best quote ever hahaha

loverboy 09-27-2005 01:14 PM

what a luxury gone to waste for Tommy

:smokin

Trax 09-27-2005 01:37 PM

in europe TH is still seen somewhat hip
but its going down heavily from what I've heard
tommy is going DOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN lol

BoNgHiTtA 09-27-2005 01:40 PM

This is one of walmarts moves to create more upscale clothing in there stores. They have been battling with the Target image (yes, some people seem to think target is upscale). They want to increase same store sales going forward.

butterflybucks 09-27-2005 01:42 PM

Look on the bright side.....they'll be cheaper to buy

I agree. Tommy is over, has been for a while now! If true, I am glad. Now people who can't afford designer clothes will think they are getting cool shit. It will make them feel good. I like it! Two thumbs up! :thumbsup :thumbsup

Wiggles 09-27-2005 01:45 PM

hmm seems like an odd company to buy that clothing line.

Stallion 09-27-2005 01:45 PM

very interesting..

This is spot on. Hilfiger started losing popularity when they changed their designs dramatically around 7 years ago. Going after a lot of the urban market. There would be seasons where their whole line was a bit out there. People started going to Polo, Nautica or other brands.

:pimp

Sparks 09-27-2005 01:51 PM

Hmm, this should be interesting. I love Hilfiger. In my opinion it is one of the few higher priced clothing companies that actually has good quality.

Wal-Mart is smart, I doubt they will damage the brand. It will be interesting to see Hilfiger in Wal-Mart stores, though.

you got so no idea about marketing and branding.

adultchica 09-27-2005 02:09 PM

Tommy Hilfiger & Wal Mart.....it will be interesting to see how that plays out. I never would have put those two together in a million years. I wonder if Tommy is making bank on this ?

PlugRush Sascha 09-27-2005 02:10 PM

Oh well... it happens. And by 'it' I mean shit.

Doctor Dre 09-27-2005 02:17 PM

I used to love hillfiger ... but lately, it's turned to shit...

Funny how nobody ever admits shopping at a Wal-Mart yet they as you say they sell $300 billion in goods a year.

That is the most ignorant comment .
Walmart is the epitome of success in america, They make life cheaper and make other business stay honest.

Drake 09-27-2005 02:45 PM

It's already been thru its lifespan as a designer brand. Other brands have come out of the woodwork to become the new elite thing to wear just as they always have. They'll be uncool in 3 years too. But Wal Mart will live on.

EroticySteve 09-27-2005 02:57 PM

Wal Mart is my favorite store. There are lots of things I wont buy there, but house stuff, bathrooom stuff there is no where better or cheaper.

Wal Mart and Garth Brooks have struck a deal too. Soon the only place you'll be able to buy Garth Brooks music will be Wal Mart. Not a big deal for most people but it's an unprecedented distribution deal.

I hope that Wal Mart does not get more heavily into music, even though they are statistically the largest retailer of music. They censor everything.

EroticySteve 09-27-2005 03:04 PM

Also from a marketing perspective, most companies will tell you that it's a very good idea to be in good with Wal Mart. One thing you can't knock Wal Mart on is their straightforward approach to working with vendors. No perks, company extravagances, all savings passed right along to the consumer. Long term contracts, easy terms and massive worldwide distribution give them a leg up when it comes to buying power.

Hilfiger would be smart to make this happen. They won't be selling $75 oxfords and the latest trends and styles. That would be best left to the premium department stores.

But within all brands including Tommy Hilfiger there are many product lines.

So long as they find that mix of quality and price Wal Mart will be a good outlet for them.

The Sears/Kmart merger was a positive move for both stores and will only help to enhance the image of both brands. The new Sears Life Essentials stores are going to be great.
