NEW YORK, September 24 (newratings.com) ? According to the New York Times, Palm Inc (ticker: PALM) is likely to Monday announce its plans to collaborate with Microsoft for its next version of Treo.

The New York Times said that Palm plans to use Microsoft's Windows Mobile software in its forthcoming version of cellphone-organizer, Treo. Associated Press quoted market analyst Rob Enderle as saying that Verizon Wireless would market Palm's new Windows Mobile software-based Treo 700. Verizon Wireless, Microsoft and Palm are scheduled to hold a press conference on Monday, in which Bill Gates is expected to be present. Microsoft has made headway into the hand-held devices market. According to Gartner, Microsoft's Windows-Mobile based hand-held devices outsold those of the Palm OS-based devices during the third quarter of last year for the first time. According to Lehman Brothers, 3Com is likely to purchase 2% of the JV by end 2005.

smart move.. they wouldnt be able to support a custom OS with the new generation of cimptuing coming up.

The new Treo 700 being introduced Monday will be the first Windows Mobile operating system on Palm's Treo phone. The phone will also feature evolution data only, or EV-DO, fast wireless Net access, as well as WiFi capabilities. Notably, the phone is not expected to be available until next year, says a person familiar with the introduction.

Looks like its almost ready for launch.

Its an advanced form of 64 bit processing where the registers are carried over to 3 calls. The first call with EAX = 80000002h, returns 16 byte string in EAX:EBX:ECX:EDX. Similiarly, with EAX = 80000003h and EAX = 80000004h, the remaining 16 + 16 bytes are retrieved. Thats too advanced to handle if your core business is hardware.

If the processor implements an address space number (ASN) register, the process translation buffer (TB) state associated with the new value of the ASN (that is, the one loaded by the LDPCTX instruction) is flushed if the process last ran on a different processor. This is indicated by the previous CPU (PRVCPU) field being not equal to the CPU identification (CPUID) register. If the processor does not implement the ASN register, the process-space TB state is unconditionally flushed.

In other words: better let someone else take care of the software!!!

The PPC 6700 is amazing. I played around with it @ work the past two days. Not bad.
