What are your SMOOTHIE recipes? Especially healthy ones.

just got an industrial strength blender like jamba juice got, it basically kicks ass. i am in smoothie mode, what are your recipes? it like a meal in a cup.

i use

strawberries
peaches
soy protein powder
bananas
sunny delight juice
and
ice

every morning

sometimes i use an egg white

Lace 09-25-2005 09:26 AM

Fuck yeah, im going to run to the store and go buy some fruit and make a smoothie now :)

Theres a type of yogurt I believe you can use in them as well.

MrIzzz 09-25-2005 09:26 AM

that sounds delicious. i need to get me an industrial blender. i've heard of people using kiwis, watermelon, coconut, pineapples, but not all at once

poppet 09-25-2005 09:27 AM

I'm a strawberry/banana/orangejuice kinda girl. :) Throw in a little whey powder or other form of protien and life is good.

'Course you probably don't want a physique like mine....:1orglaugh

Actually, that sounds like a really interesting tropical mix. :)

Varius 09-25-2005 09:29 AM

For very healthy, you can try pineapple/celery or blueberry/spinach...they might not taste the greates though :upsidedow

its really like a meal in a glass. the smoothie has 20 grams of protein with the soy protein powder. when i put all the fruits in there it looked like a damn salad bar. and its healthy.

i just got tired of eating shit like fast food.

i bought 120 bucks worth of bulk fruits. you can get it at costco.

the blender was 120.

protein powder was 24.99

for an investment of about 265 or so, not to say youhave to get the bomb ass blender, you can have enough fruit and stuff for a month and a half.

:thumbsup

Black and decker makes an awesome one that will stand up to a beating. you need a good one for the ice, some blenders get owned in about a month of hard use wand ice crushing.

Black and Decker has a beefy one. its like 65 bucks or something
icq me if you want

After Shock Media 09-25-2005 10:53 AM

Freeze some banana's still in their skin. (they will turn black btw). Then defrost and peel. (makes a lot of sense eh?) Actually this process destroys most of the cell walls and makes the banana kind of runny and allows it to give maximum flavor.
Some frozen strawberries or if you like costco the summer berry blend.
Small handfull of frozen blueberries. (optional)
Vanilla flavored protien powder.
Plain yogurt (flavored is optional, and vanilla works well).
small squeeze of lemon juice or a few tablespoons of frozen oj concentrate.

Forgo the ice, the frozen berries will be more than enough.

If you want it a little sweeter (sometimes the berries are not that sweet) add a few drizzles of raw honey.

leenks 09-25-2005 01:54 PM

I use most of this, and then add a little creatine...

I've crapped out 3 blenders though, need to find something that can take the beating :)

Also, there's an awesome milk product from Iceland called "skyr" that's the best stuff to put in smoothies - ever. I think they're trying to market it in or around washington soon, so keep an eye out, it's worth the try ;)

Ace-wtf 09-25-2005 01:55 PM

fresh mango and soy milk

Babagirls 09-25-2005 01:57 PM

1 cup of Non-Fat vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup of OJ
1/2 cup of fresh strawberries
1 bannana
1/2 cup of ice

blend for 1 minute :thumbsup

Makes one hell of a Strawberry-Bannana Smoooooooothie, its my new breakfast meal.

What kind of fruit lasts a month and a half?

I buy enough to last a week, anything after that is probably going to go bad.

Dagwolf 09-25-2005 01:58 PM

Vanilla ice cream, milk, chocolate syrup and sugar.

I have started freezing bananas (peeled) and using them instead of ice.

aico 09-25-2005 02:00 PM

I use a lot of frozen berries, like raspberry, blueberry, strawberry, blackberry, etc, with some orange juice, some vanilla yogurt and some of my kick ass protein powder. Oh and a banana.

i buy in-season fruits that i like in 2's or 4's, and freeze them till i need them.
takes 24 hours to naturally thaw out in the fridge.

i normally strip the very ripe almost black room temp bananas from the skins and freeze them in bulk. with frozen fruits you don't have to use alot of ice.

good idea on the honey, i need that for energy.

JuiceMonkey 09-25-2005 02:03 PM

soy protein will lower your test levels, sunny d is full of sugar

some FF yogurt (plain)
strawberries (frozen)
blueberries (frozen)
peaches (frozen)
Mango (frozen)
Skim Milk
Vanilla extract
Splenda..

ah . . . I can't get into frozen fruit with all the fresh stuff we have around here. If you are using frozen fruit, why bother adding ice?

sherie 09-25-2005 02:09 PM

I have a shit load of recepies for ya...too much to type tho. They are all very healthy!

yeh, i figured that out this weekend. monkey see monkey do. i saw them at jamba juice adding a scoop of ice with the frozen fruits. i am going to discontinue that practice. it makes it too thick. i am gonna also stop using the sunny d. i dont want that sugar. and i looked on the container and it has a few preservatives. plain oj will do just fine, goddamn sales at the supermarket had me thinking like an economist instead of a nutritionist. gggrrrrrrrrr.

Why do you use soy protein powder?

I usually have 3 shakes a day. Depending on how much time I have I'll toss some cool shit together, but sometimes it ends up just being milk, protein powder (usually whey) and maybe a banana or two. Mixing strawberries, raspberries and bananas into some milk with vanilla whey protein powder is fucking sexcellent. It's not really a 'smoothie', but it's fucking good.

Enjoy your blender action!

GFX Wiz 09-26-2005 12:26 PM

ice
skim milk
splash of OJ
vanilla yogurt
banana
peanut butter
raw oats
whey protein powder

Have it first thing in the morning or sometime before lunch -- I dropped 35 pounds in 4 months and now I am too skinny again. You'll find it fills you up so you don't eat very much the rest of the day. and it's deliscious.

I use flax seed oil. It has the same benefits as fish oil but, tastes soo much better. Gives it almost a nutty flavor. That being said, this is my fav smoothie recipe.

8 to 12 oz skim milk
1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
1 frozen banana
3 - 4 large frozen strawberries
1 scoop vanilla whey protein powder
1 tablespoon flax seed oil

I have a blender/food processor combo and use the food processor setting to grind up the frozen fruit.

this will be breakfast tomorrow

selena 09-26-2005 12:56 PM

I make them alot for the boys, but I don't really have a recipe in terms of giving amounts. Here's one they like alot

Cherry juice (the 100% juice stuff)
frozen cherries (unsweetned)
plain yogurt
wheat germ
small amount of honey to offset tartness of cherries

seeric 09-26-2005 12:58 PM

we should start a GFY cookbook.

no fast food doesn't count. :1orglaugh

Yeah, flax seed oil is good for you. You can take fishoil capsules for omega-3 fatty acids too. That's a bit off-topic but thought I'd toss that in there just because we're generally talking about good health. :thumbsup

Enjoy your shakes!

so flaxseed oil and fish oil doesnt do the same thing health wise?

Tom_PM 09-26-2005 07:24 PM

Flash frozen fruit is just as good as fresh IMO.. even when blueberries are in season I buy the store brand frozen ones. They're just great.
I need a beefy blender too.. nothing whimpy thats going to need me to stab it with a knife to make it go..
