About 5 months ago some girl asked my GF and I to watch her cat for 2 WEEKS it is not 5 MONTHS later and the girl comes around looking for the cat.. i told her she cant have it... but she said give it or i will call the cops and all that shit... so I CALLED THE COPS and the cops told me that if they give me $$ to cover all the bills and such i HAVE TO GIVE it back.. but thats not the god damn poitn my GF is in love with this cat.. and now i got to thell her we have to give it back after the fact that i told her that i will not let the other bitch get the cat back... HOW THE FUCK IS THE LAW SO MESSED?? fuck man when we got this cat it had worms and shit so we had to get he clead up and my other 2 cats also we bought food for it we took care of it... treated it like it was one of the family.... i am just so pisses... the chick will give us 200 CDN wich is more then enough to cover the bills but it aint enough to cover the time spent and shit like that.... :(

there is a legal principle called abandonment. If you really are concerned about it - call a lawyer.

Under the law - if you abandon something it is free game. This is how in SOME states you can steal peoples trash and things like that.

I think 5 months could certainly be considered abandonment. Cats are considered property - if it was her CHILD - then parents have certain rights - she has no more rights to it than if it was a dishwasher she left with you.

I couldn't say for sure - but I would really talk with a lawyer if you are concerned.

Keep the cat. It was basically abandoned. Asking someone to watch your cat for 2 weeks then leaving it for 5 months without even calling is crap.

Ask animal control. Posession tends to affect ownership in various jurisdictions, as far as pets go.

Oh - See you live in Canada - I have no clue what they do up there :) Sorry - good luck - I'd still talk with a lawyer to see if they have anything like that in Canada. It doesn't seem fair to you...

I have pets from the Humane Society, and you can at least cost her a couple days and 150+ dollars to re-adopt her own cat. I dont know about Canada, but pets from the Humane Society here in Detroit are not free.

Change its name when you give it to them so she has to search physically for it and then the cats records will always show the wrong name. Give it something real fucked up. Shave all its fur off first, except for the head.

Hmm... if you leave your car in a parking garage and pay for 2 days upfront, then don't come for it until weeks later, they can legally keep your car until you pay what you owe. Surely there's a law to protect you in the same way... say she can't have her cat back until she pays back the expenses you put into keeping the cat.

I know the expenses are beside the point, though... just a thought.

i saw this same case in Judge Judy a couple weeks back,,, as far as the orginal owner was concerned the cat was abandon to you,,,, it would of been a different story if she paid for the vet bills and gave you money to keep the cat like you would in a kennel....

you don't even need a lawyer because this can goto the small claims court,,, but of course thats how it is in the US

Call the humane society or whatever you have, and report that the cat has been neglected by its owner for 4.5 months, and that you're in possesion of it. When they come to take it away, ask where you can go to adopt it permanently.

That's a very good idea. Hell, I know that the few times that I brought my dog to the kennel, I had to pay $10 per day for it and I had to supply the food for him.

If you give her a high enough price to get the cat back, chances are, she'll just say "fuck it". If not, you'll be in a lot more extra money to go out and buy a new cat.

I can tell you what! They don't sit behind you and grumble when you don't pay attention to them and don't drop their toys in your lap ~200 times till they get you to play them. Now a cat on the other hand will just walk on your keyboard and then lay down on it when they want attention...

Cats will even catch their own meal if you are 1 hour late with feeding them (at least mine does)

I'm getting a new one in 2 months! He is a Devon Rex, only 4 weeks old. A new kitten will help her get over the one to which she is already attached and she will LOOOVVEEE you for it, and so will your other cats.

To add to what redshift and Slick said, I was told that every time the 'kitty condo' folks opened a can of cat food to feed my girls they would charge me $2.00 ~ add that to the $5.00 a day you're entitled to for board (that's actually cheap - 'round here they want $10), and it brings your total to $1050 American, or about $1400 Canadian. Talk to a lawyer before you do ANYTHING with the cat, you could be making some green for that time spent if you know all your rights.
Get some quotes from boarding homes around you and take the chick to court with all this information. Sue her for the cost of boarding proving that it's a reasonable figure with all the paperwork you provide. The dollar amount is low enough to keep it 'small claims', heck call the Judge Judy equivelent for Canada and get paid for your appearance too!
