Are you worried about your servers in Texas?

i know some pretty big datacenters are in Houston and other parts of Texas too... so are you a little worried if you host in that state?

BoNgHiTtA 09-23-2005 02:27 PM

Rackspace is, and yes I am. I have been doing full offsite backups regularly.

sicone 09-23-2005 02:28 PM

I never even thought about my servers at EV1 (rack shack). Shit I got some backing up to do

Easton 09-23-2005 02:30 PM

yes i'm surprised more people haven't been talking about this potential huge risk and downtime from power outages, etc...

Yeah, I'm on rackspace too. Their contingency plan seems pretty good but I'm not quite sure how they plan on mirroring their entire datacenter to the UK. Well, hope for the best...

My friend is worried, just have backups and hope for the best.

Wolfy 09-23-2005 02:33 PM

Theplanet is in Dallas. :D

Easton 09-23-2005 02:34 PM

here is a memo i just got from one of my hosts...

"We are a couple hundred miles away from the shore, so storm surge is not that large of an issue for us, however flooding, and extended duration power outages from city power grid remain a concern.

Rest assured that we have and are currently taking pre-cautionary measures to do our best to ensure service continuity during the hurricane. We have tested our backup resources and are fully prepared for the hurricane. We do have a network engineer on site to ensure network stability, should any outages occur within our peer or transit provider groupings.

The mayor has issued mandatory evacuation notices for Houston, and other parts of Harris and Montgomery County, however most of our executive staff, as well as some volunteer technical system administrators have pledged to stay behind and we are currently taking shelter in our datacenter building. We are currently running with a skeleton staff however are handling critical support requests such as reboots and other urgent issues. We will have at least 4 staff members available at the datacenter during the storm to handle any problems that will arrive during the storm. Our offsite technical support team will be fully staffed during the duration of the storm."

Yes, but it's Bush.

abadfish 09-23-2005 03:58 PM

I wouldn't be worried, I'm sure the datacenters are some of the best places to be in the event of a storm :)

EV1 is pretty huge though, so that would affect a lot of people. Luckily The Planet is far out of the way.

Quotealex 09-23-2005 04:03 PM

Not the bit worried. All my servers are in New York and in Montreal :uhoh

ionic 09-23-2005 04:15 PM

apparently theplanets datacentre is capable of withstanding upto a cat5 hurricane lol, they should rent rooms

abadfish 09-23-2005 04:33 PM

I wouldn't doubt it. I have been there several times, from the outside you would never guess what it was. It's pretty impressive inside too.

EscortBiz 09-23-2005 05:03 PM

why are there so many toxic waste dumps in NJ and so many lawyers in NY?

NJ had first picks

facialfreak 09-23-2005 05:53 PM

My servers are in Dulles, VA, so thank god I will not have to worry ...

My sympathies are with those who do ... or more importantly the PEOPLE in those areas ... the wind will not kill people, but the surges and heavy rains will :(

Sparks 09-23-2005 06:43 PM

That's why they have data centers that can withstand category 4 and 5 hurricanes. Good luck to everyone!

Easton 09-23-2005 07:30 PM

i just spoke with one of my other hosts in the affected area and they have enough diesel fuel stocked to power their generators for 2 weeks apparently

so far so good i guess
