Do you scuba?
Just got certified and having an amazing time. Wondering who else here is into it because I would love to arrange dives at future conventions where the geography permits.

|

I noticed yesterday that my local shop arranges trips to dive up there frequently. I will definately let you know when I am coming up. I am dry suit equipped and ready to see a sixgill! Anyone that wants to email me contact info: timlake AT homegrownvideo.com |

You are close too if that is the case. |
I do a little diving once in a while, maybe for our Costarican Bash we could get something set up, itīs just amazing diving down here... :thumbsup
|
I have been certified since I was 16 from NASDS back in 1986. I actually moved to the Cayman Islands for 4 years just to dive and work. Great shallow water reefs and awesome wall dives. Great place to see Eagle Rays and Marlin hugging the wall at 130'.
I will do the Red Sea one day. |

Nor Cal. About 90 miles north of Sac. But I'd be up there if there's a good place to dive and dive buddies to go with! :) |
Sure do.
Heaps of good spots just off Brisbane. FOUND NEMO Spend some time up Cairns earlier this year diving the Great Barrier Reef... talk about paradise. 29°C 20m down. |
NAUI certified in (gasp) 1991. Christ I'm old.

california coast dives do not compare with tropics.
get a plane ticket to cebu, PI. then head south off negros oriental. check out apo island, etc. warm clear water, no dangerous currents, amazing marine life. and amazing women also. http://www.atlantishotel.com/ |
that's great, count me in next time!

Still... I do hear the kelp forests by Catalina are first class and world renowned... won't know until i tried 'em all... |
I prefer cold water, to be honest with ya. I think there is more to see. Yes, there's a lot of life in warm water but it all starts looking the same after awhile. Cold water rocks!

I read one of Cousteau's favorite spots to dive in the world was Puget Sound right here in Washington. Don't know about those other spots but I do know we have the world's largest species of octopus right here... |
One thing I've never done but it's on the list... That and skydiving.

I love diving! My first ever was in Australia, a great little spot called Manta Ray Bay and of course the Barrier Reef. After that, I was hooked (small wonder!)
|
I've been wanting to do this for quite some time. Did a lot of snorkeling in Mexico and it was amazing. I couldn't dive too far down when I wanted to though. How much does cost to get certified? I know there are a few places around here that do it.
|
Been certified for a few years now, but have only gone a handful of times. Cali lobster season is just around the corner which makes for some good dives.
|
yup, PADI certified diver here for about 7 years now.
Some of the best diving I have done was off the Turks and Caios Islands. its awsome!! http://www.landofvenus.com/diving/dive1.jpg |

PADI is great and easy to find but I am sure the others people have mentioned are equally legit. |
cold water bites.... We went diving off the channel islands (off of LA) and it was so cold I had to wear hood and gloves. Sucks ..I prefer warm water any day to cold.

make sure you get a nice warm wetsuit, hood and gloves...your going to need it. Its cold off the channel islands.
here are some pics of our trip out to catalina http://www.landofvenus.com/channelislands/ Oh ya, bring your sea sickness pills...it can be a nasty ride out there. Quote:

I don't do well with the cold but remember I got certified in 54 degrees... in a dry suit though but at least it is something I am certainly prepared for... I am going to bring both my dry suit and a seven millimeter wet suit and see which I prefer. I figure it will be great to lose all that when I dive warmer tropical waters but in the mean time it is still amazing fun any way you slice it. |
Did it several times when I was once assissted my friend on his marine biology study. It took me two days of training and preparation before I was able to know the basics of it.
|
diving off the channel islands is a big thing, lots of people go. I think our trip was 5 dives and it was from sunup to sundown. they had a cook on the boat and sleeping areas below. Its different then warm water thats for sure, not as much color. the people diving are different also. Off florida and the turks not destroying the reefs and killing the sea creatures was really harped on. When we went off the channel islands, we saw people beating on things with their knives, shooting at anything that moved with spear guns...just a different kind of people or diving, how ever you want to look at it.

Yep, up here everyone seems conservation minded and the fish are really comfortable without being too "domesticated" as a result. I thought I would be all into getting into the spearfishing end (lord knows I love the sushi) but as soon as I swam with the fishes I lost the urge to kill them and now just want to get a camera. I am not opposed to grabbing a crab or lobster though when it is legal to do so... |
Scuba diving is one of my fantasy. I wish i would experience that before i die.
