Sosa 09-15-2005 12:48 PM

like personal checking or savings? I bet most people have under 1grand in savings and the same with checking. Most people aren't smart with their finances.

mrthumbs 09-15-2005 12:50 PM

buddyjuf 09-15-2005 12:51 PM

Rinaldo 09-15-2005 01:00 PM

I read somewhere that the majority of the world lived paycheck to paycheck and that if you're keeping more than 500 in your account you'er better than most.

Sam Granger 09-15-2005 01:01 PM

$2000? 8chars

Sosa 09-15-2005 02:16 PM

ya. 75% of the people I'm sure live paycheck to paycheck. I might not have a ton in my personal, but I keep it in my business account for tax purposes.

DateDoc 09-15-2005 02:23 PM

they have almost enough to get to their next paycheck......

wiggitywack 09-15-2005 02:32 PM

the average Americcan savings rate is now zero....

I bet the Europeans and esp. the Japanese tend to have a lot more saved...they are more disciplined

pornguy 09-15-2005 02:34 PM

I would say that the average person have about 2500 at any givne time.

After Shock Media 09-15-2005 02:34 PM

Average, I would suppose approx. 15 to 25% of their take home wages at any given time.

toddler 09-15-2005 02:39 PM

Certainly not $10k for the average person. More like $1k, if that. I'm happy not being average....

phogirl69 09-15-2005 02:40 PM

Most people live paycheck to paycheck and don't make enough to save. AVERAGE salary in the US is only 36k.

http://66.102.7.104/search?q=cache:H...ient=firefox-a

That means the bi-weekly is around 1k or so give or take a few after taxes. That's not very much if you have bills to pay. Of course a lot of people make more but they are not the average.

Average person probably has 3-4 k at best I would guess.

A lot of my friends, (in their mid-late twenties) don't even have 3 or 4 k, and are more like living paycheck to paycheck or more like dollar to dollar.

When I had a 9-5 I was barely able to save ANYTHING after rent, bills, and then of course shopping.... I was only able to save once I started selling porn.

Kassidy 09-15-2005 02:41 PM

Less than $1k...majority of people live paycheque to paycheque and owe owe owe.

Peaches 09-15-2005 02:54 PM

I agree that probably the average American has less than $1K. I would be a nervous wreck. One thing I started doing when the money came in was put at least 6 months worth of basic living expenses in a low interest (well, now it is...back in the late 90's it was high interest...) easily accessible account. You never know what's going to happen :(

blazin 09-15-2005 03:02 PM

Average person hasn't got shit in the bank.

Serge Litehead 09-15-2005 03:05 PM

Think you are prob right Kassidy!

There are obvious variances from country to country as well - the US lives on credit and the EU don't so much, but fast getting that way. Then ya got folks in countries who never ever had a bank account (but oddly, can be better off than some people in "civilized countries").

CynthiaB 09-15-2005 03:16 PM

$30 dollars any less and they just take it for fees

tapatio 09-15-2005 03:20 PM

I looked for a few minutes to find it online. I was not able to come up with a national average. Did anyone else look?

sherie 09-15-2005 03:25 PM

Hmmm I would have to agree with the fact that most average people live pay cheque to pay cheque and owe the banks. I am so greatful that I am debt free...took a long time to pay back student loans but I managed 18K over a few years, but it feels good to not owe anything. Well, I have one credit card and I pay that off in full each month or every two weeks.

After Shock Media 09-15-2005 03:39 PM

Well lets see.
Average personal debt is right around 20k (mortgage not included).
Average yearly salary in the US is also right near 20k.

This now pulled from US department of Commerce.
Average savings percentages in the US since 12-04 to current.
December 2004 4.4%
January 2005 0.9%
February 2005 0.6%
March 2005 0.5%
April 2005 0.2%
May 2005 0.4%
June 2005 0.0%

Looks like nearly 100% of average peoples incomes are going to rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries, debt, or whatnot. Thus I still will go with my previous answer of 10-25% of any given paycheck at any given time, accounting for check floating and the like. Though technically it appears that many accounts are in a negative in reality if a paycheck was late, they got injured or had a large expense.

Edit- couple quotes I found.
More than 40% of all women had less than $500 in the bank. For those 25 to 34 years old, the percentage without a rainy day fund jumped to 55%.

"a large proportion" of Americans are not saving and have never saved, Salisbury acknowledges. "That's largely a function of income . . . They're just barely managing to survive as it is, and they don't have enough income to save."

More than 70% said they worried about their finances in the last year, and two-thirds said that unexpected expenses -- things like the furnace breaking or the car needing to be fixed -- were the cause of that worry

Ray Nagin 09-15-2005 03:43 PM

lifes a bitch and then you die

billywatson 09-15-2005 03:49 PM

They have just about enough to make it to next payday...whenever that is...

potter 09-15-2005 03:52 PM

Yup, basically if someone is making $5k monthly. They've surely found a way to spend $5k monthly (if not more). We're consumers (America), we spend money our money.

fl_prn_str 09-15-2005 03:52 PM

$9.99 (usd).

tranza 09-15-2005 06:34 PM

credit card debt is what kills many people

Barefootsies 09-15-2005 07:19 PM

When you say the "Average person" I would guess you are referring to the "masses". That being the case, I'd say little. Some might have a couple of grand, but I'd say they are the exception if a grunt working a 9-5 and prolly more a check to check person.

First job I got after college was with a telco. Depending on your education level and experience determined where you started on the "scale" (this was a union job). If you had a degree, and a lot of sale experience you started near the top ($50k), if not you were around $30k, but maxed out via contract in 5 years. With different sales incentives, you could easily make $75k.

Anyways, I remember when I was first hired in my trainer used to tell us over and again about not getting caught in the "golden handcuffs" because it would trap you in a job you did not like, unable to transfer or leave. Long story short, she was referring to getting used to making that much money, over spending, and so forth.

Anyways, I remember being stunned over my 6 years there that people would get paid on a Friday, and by the next Monday would be asking to borrow money. Ofcourse these would be the people with 3-5 kids, driving the brand new cars, and living in the houses they couldn't afford, etc, etc etc.

Now I am not saying $50k is like 100k or more and people can live like kings by any means if you have a family, kids, and the rest. But I mean where I am in MI, $50k can definately go a long way unless you have no money management skills.

A lot of these people had no money in the bank, and any time their cars broken down, or there was some emergency, there was drama. I know this because I was a union steward (i.e. privie to all their mellow dramas) for part of my time there, and would have to defend them to keep their job.

So the average person (being the masses) had no savings of any kind they contributed to anyways. The more intelligent normally had a couple of grand or more either in a bank, CD, stock market, investment of some sort.

:Oh crap
