it's more on child pornography though...we don't pimp children here...

CheeseFrog 09-14-2005 11:21 PM

I thought it was already illegal to produce CP? Why do they need more and more laws reiterating it?

You sure?

The bill authorizes forfeiture of assets related to both child pornography and obscenity cases, expands administrative subpoena power in obscenity cases and broadly prohibits the production, transport, distribution and sale of obscene materials.

Hmmm now I wonder what a Republican would consider "obscene"? Oh, I know, ALL porn.

Thinking this way is naive.

Since last year, the gov. has scored many great points to their cause. Things have been aligning well for them for the first time in decades (court nominess in all courts, regulations passed and bills signed quickly without any discussion in the House/Senate, many laws and regulations coming together for greater, deadlier strike [asset forfeitures, etc], general public feelings regarding porn and more). This should be telling you something. The days when things would never happen are over, in my opinion. The days when things will be argued, defended, confronted and fought over may be right ahead. Read between the lines and you'll see how they are now circumventing the FSC trial. The gov's position has gotten stronger in this particular arena, with courts and legislative powers tuning in accordingly

This last HR is one BIG reason for concern.

Another naive point, sorry to say.

These guys want to score in the obscenity field, not the child pornography one. Period. They might soon be in a position to prove that ANYTHING that does not offer artistic value or resembles the Mona Lisa smile, IS OBSCENE. Forget about local communities shit. And forget about the film industry and all their leftish bastards like Sean Penn (their thinking, not mine). Most of the right wing conservatives will only be happy the day Hollywood spits out dinosaur movies and nothing else. And yes, this may mean the end of porn, something they will be thrilled with regardless of the economic impact (probably small).

For those who haven't been following judge Roberts hearings he stated yesterday -very briefly- that PORNOGRAPHY IS NOT PROTECTED SPEECH as much as political speech or other categories. This is of CRITICAL IMPORTANCE.

You have good points but this one adds hollywood to the mix and thats not going to happen. Also there is all the posing but at the end of the day politicians know the common man likes his playboy and porn and if they fuck with that too much. They will be looking for new work.

Roberts has been so guarded in his responses too. Just about ANYTHING that could be deemed controversial he has danced around. Very scary that on this issue he has no problem at all stating his views. That demonstrates just how little folks support our industry on Capital Hill. All those hours of confirmation hearings and I know only two things about Roberts,
1) he sides with Scalia on 1st Amendment issues as they relate to Adult and
2) his favorite movies are Dr Zhivago and North by Northwest.

Folks should consider another thing too. Roberts has been the easy confirmation play by Bush. He is widely regarded as a shoe in for confirmation. The next Supreme Court appointment for Sandra Day O'conner is an opportunity for Bush to lean even more to the right and appease the Religious conservatives who so supported the GOP in 04.
