Can you Deep Fry Ice Cream?

This was a question that was asked by one of the guests at a party this past summer at Pbucksjohn's house. When I was on the boardwalk today I had passed this sign which reminded me of that. So can you deep fry ice cream?

20 oz. chocolate chip ice cream - low fat okay
2 cups four-grain flake cereal - crushed
1 1/2 Tbls. granulated sugar
3 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 eggs
1 tsp. water
(4) 8" flour tortillas
vegetable oil - for frying
cinnamon sugar - for garnish
whipped cream - for garnish
4 maraschino cherries - for garnish
Form ice cream into 4 balls. Place in baking pan and freeze solid, 2 hours or longer.
-Mix cereal, sugar, and cinnamon. Divide equally between 2 pie plates or other shallow containers.
-Beat eggs with water.
-Roll each ice cream ball in cereal mixture and press coating into ice cream.
-Dip coated ball in egg wash, then roll in second container of cereal mixture. Again, press coating onto ice cream.
-Freeze coated ice cream balls solid, 4-6 hours.
-Shape each tortilla into hourglass form (with narrow waist) by cutting off curved slice from 2 opposite sides. One end will serve as base for ice cream. Other end will be decorative fan.
-Heat oil in wok or large deep-fryer.
-Place tortilla between 2 ladles or large spoons of different sizes (smaller ladle on top). Place tortilla so that base end is cupped in larger ladle to form basket, with back of upper fan supported by handle of larger ladle. Deep-fry until crisp.
-Drain and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar. Set aside.
-Deep-fry frozen coated ice cream balls 30-45 seconds.
-Place each fried tortilla in large-stemmed glass, with fan part of tortilla standing vertically above glass. Set fried ice cream ball in base of tortilla. Top with dollop of whipped cream and decorate with cherry.

Definitly and it's fucking great . Only had it twice tought ... really fat.

It was at Lone Star (Texas grill style restaurent). They put some coating arround it (lots of sugar), some whip cream and chocolate on top of everything. YUMMMMMMY

CDSmith 09-11-2005 09:50 PM

I had it once many years ago. I believe the coating is made with graham and coconut, like a thick breading almost, then the ball of ice cream coated with the "breading" is deep-fried.

It was pretty good actually, as I recall.

fl_prn_str 09-11-2005 09:50 PM

yum yum :winkwink:

Babagirls 09-11-2005 09:50 PM

ya, doesnt Chilli's resturant have Fried Ice Cream or something?

Holly 09-11-2005 09:52 PM

I've had it before, too. There's a really big restaurant chain that sells it but I can't think of which one it is, at the moment.

You're thinking about Chi Chi's and they haven't been open for as long as I can remember. You can still buy their salsa at the grocery store, though. :thumbsup

They were a great restaurant for a long time and had a great run. I remember eating there a lot of times in Jacksonville when I was a kid. However, they have been closed for years. Their fried ice cream was some pretty good stuff! It reminded me of Pie-ala-mode with the hot and cold mixture.

Flash-frying is soooooo Southern.

There is a shop in edinburgh that will deep fry anything edible. I think they use beer batter for just about everything too. Deep fried Snickers bars were the most popular if i recall.

why would you make a fucking statement like that when there's 20 answers and even a recipe explaining it can be done?
