Linux is a piece of shit. I've spent 2 or 3 hours fixing permissions issues

and a swap partition that went kablooey, and I still don't know why Haldaemon won't start, and why Squid will run under a root command line, but not on rc3.d....

:BangBang:

heh, linux its ok.
the problem is between the chair and the keyboard.

I installed linux on my laptop and battled with it for a few days, didn't get wlan to work, then I didn't get it to recognize my 2gig ram etc etc etc.. I never thought I'd admit it, but windows is a decent piece of software. I've gotten dumb. When I played around with dos 5.0 and editing config.sys and autoexec.bat to free enough memory to launch some game, I still knew how computers work. Now I couldn't figure linux out. Windows has made things too easy. lol :)

So, if I had no sex life, bad skin, was fat and bearded, and played D&D all night long with my all-male friends, I'd surely be able to get this shit up and running ?

seriously, thats pretty lame.
all you need is some brain and enough experience.

Linux is user-friendly!

It's just picky about who its friends are.

Among the biggest drawbacks to open-source software is the lack of documentation and too many, often obscure, customizable options.

Windows, despite all its flaws, is designed to install with minimal intervention from the user - it's remarkable the vast range of hardware configurations Windows handles - not saying perfectly, but good enough for most installs to complete, and work adequately.

Linux, despite all the talk of it being "mainstream", is and will remain focused towards folks who enjoy tinkering around and for people / companies with the need for an alternative solution to Windows for servers, etc.

Linux is free only if your time is worth nothing :2 cents:

Turner 09-11-2005 09:16 AM

Nobody ever said that Linux/UNIX was for the masses. It's for smart people. If it took you hours to fix a permissions problem..... well.

OTerror 09-11-2005 10:07 AM

get yourself a mac ;)

tgpmakers 09-11-2005 11:09 AM

Linux is great would never go back to windows. If your getting permission problems try uninstalling and reinstalling. Also if this is a home workstation sometimes chmod 777 sorts it all out but this is not secure and not recomended. Also distros are different quite a lot try a different one.

Just because you don't know how to use it doesn't mean it's a piece of shit...

ghood 09-11-2005 04:27 PM

My girlfriend using linux during two or more years...

You might want to try a different distro. One that is popular for people migrating from windows is Mepis. It is Debian based, is an easy install, does an excellent job of configuring your hardware, and has plenty of support at MepisLovers.org
