Just how frugal are you?

I personally do a great deal to save as much cash as I can. I would be interested in knowing what other do if they also try to keep as much of the money they make.

Some of the things I do.
Rarely buy produce, nearly everything is grown in backyard or in my greenhouse.
I have chickens that keep my household in eggs all the time.
I buy my beef still on the hoof and have it raised then butchered by local farmers.
I make full use of fishing seasons and tags and get as many fish as possible to freeze.
I do can and dehydrate food.
Have negotiated my phone bill down to next to nothing by playing carriers off of each other.
I use as many coupons and rebates as possible.
Nearly all of my clothes cost well under 20.00 for any item aside from my jacket.

Plus a lot of other cheap things. PS calling me a cheap fuck or whatever does not bother me.

brand0n 09-08-2005 06:46 PM

The steaks are great, the local butcher shop who handles it all even dry ages the steaks for me.

fris 09-08-2005 06:47 PM

mrbling 09-08-2005 06:55 PM

Plane tickets area real cheap during september/october february/march!

My ass squeaks when I walk! :winkwink: But I do spend on cars! :Oh crap

slapass 09-08-2005 07:12 PM

You realise that all the time you are spending on stuff that is less then $10/hour? Get rid of the cow, chickens, garden and fishing crap. Work more and your bank account will swell. You are not cheap, you are inefficient.

JJ Gold 09-08-2005 07:13 PM

I get drunk bitches to pay my bar tab. :thumbsup

How does the above translate into me working less and being ineffecient?
Lets cover each.
The cow I do not raise a farmer does, then a butcher prepares and delivers it at a cost much less than retail. Zero of my time used.
The chickens are handled and fed by one of my tennets in exchange for half of the eggs. No cost no time to me.
The garden is just productive landscaping that I also use as one of my main hobbies and areas where I can actually relax. This may take up an hour to two per week.
Fishing, well many will actually pay to go fishing. Again a great way to unwind.

Now onto productivity. I am very productive and have worked a steady 10-12 hours a day now for the last 8 to 9 years. My bank account is in no way hurting though I rarely keep much money in an actual bank account, I can get real interest and returns elsewhere. You also will not find me ever complaining about my income, its doing just great.

I steal toilet paper

phogirl69 09-08-2005 07:27 PM

I am cheap but not THAT cheap...

When buying food I really don't care much I usually buy whatever's cheapest. Same with household stuff, I go to Walmart because it' as cheap as it gets.
I drive an old car that's really good on gas. I don't mind eating cheap food at all.

When it comes to clothes, I can be cheap sometimes, but I also buy a lot of designer jeans and those are not cheap :helpme

I fight with my bf a lot because I think he spends too much money, even though he makes less than me. He REFUSES to eat any food that is generic brand, he will not touch store brand spaghetti such as Ralphs or Albertsons, and I think he spends $8-$10 to buy one container of Odwalla orange juice.

Plus he just recently bought a $200 HAIR DRYER! It's his money so it's not my say, but it pisses me off because we live together and right now he only pays
45% of the rent (he is supposed to pay 50%) and he pays NO utilities, I pay for it. His excuse is because I make 7-8 X more than he does. Thing is that it's not my fault I make more, but I am also very frugal most of the time.

I get mad when he pays $200 for a blowdryer but then refuses to pay utilities because he says it's not fair that he doesn't make as much as me. But I'm thinking, if you don't make enough, why the fuck are you spending so much on a blow dryer? And then he'll say that cheap hair dryers burn his head and lots of other crap :helpme

In case nobody has pointed this out to you yet, you have a pussy and controll who gets to play with it. :winkwink:

phogirl69 09-08-2005 07:30 PM

Also a tip to all the cheap people, try visiting an ethnic or asian grocery store if they have it in your area. It is MUCH cheaper than regular American grocery store chains and decent quality. It's almost half price. You can buy a shitload of produce, seafood and meat there for SUPER DUPER cheap.

I was probably too agressive. This probably works out for you. I did some cost control work on my life recently and it came out that if I could hire it cheaper then my hourly-taxes. It paid to hire it out.

Obviously the hard ones to figure our quality of life issues. Fresh food versus store, fun versus true work.

Yeah its a carefull balance. My time is worth a set minimum amount and that is always factored into the budget when I make adjustments.
Example being I do have a house keeper, that was wasted time that is worth more than the rate she charges.

Well, utilites is not much, it's only electricity, phone and cable. It's not a lot, but that doesn't mean I like paying for it all. But it's not that bad, I can live with it.

Im carefully cheap.
Other examples being I will not try to save money and buy a piece of shit brand of tools. I also spend more than I could get away with on things like cheese.
Oh and the fiance does not have to be cheap, thankfully she just ussually is.

After Shock Media 09-08-2005 07:41 PM

Oh something else. I am a reciept whore and I also drive my accountant insane I am sure. I am constantly on his ass about what else can I deduct.

Platinumpimp 09-08-2005 08:07 PM

I don't get it. People trying to earn as much as possible yet being so cheap.

I mean, you can save all you want, but in the end you still die like the rest of us. Then what are you going to do with all your "hard earned" money? :pimp
So better life a bit more in wealth, and spend a little more. Money is there to be spent.

Thats some loser boy you got there. I'd dump him if he was an associate let alone as a mate haha.

Peaches 09-08-2005 08:37 PM

I use coupons and only buy clothes/house items/appliances on sale or at outlet malls. I would love to be able to grow/raise my own food but I'm lazier than I am frugal :)

mrbling 09-08-2005 08:39 PM

PlatinumPimp,
Its funny, I actually find it quite an adventure to save money, such as find the cheapest cruises with the highest quality and then searching for the unique budget restaurants in madrid that tastes great.

The key is to live life happy, but save a lot of money, I use to save around 95% of the money earned per year. Now I get to reap the benefits and still live like how I use to, exciting but inexpensive.

And most of all, everything thats REALLY fun costs very little money.

I just like staying rich you know :D

garce 09-08-2005 08:44 PM

I'm Scottish.

Old joke:

How do you find out how many Scots there are in Toronto?

Roll a dime down Yonge Street.

I'm moderately frugal. I don't waste anything. I price shop. I shop when there are sales and specials.

phogirl69 09-08-2005 10:27 PM

Other ways I am cheap:

-Sometimes when I go to drive thrus I am ghetto and buy stuff from the 99 cents menu and get water instead of soda because it's free!

-I've used coupons in restaurants before. I used to eat at Acapulco's restaurant where if you buy one dinner you get a free dinner for 99 cents!

- Buy rice at the asian grocery store. You get a 30lb bag for like $15 or so.
The bag is so damn big it lasts longer than a year!

-Sometimes I buy imitation designers , for example I have fake D&G sunglasses. Only costs $12! I am not above buying fake handbangs as long as it doesn't look fake...

-Anything that you need serviced or buy, always buy at an asian place, it is always cheaper...

I like to be super cheap, I am one of those people who are savers not spenders. I USED to be a spender but I changed my ways.

So better life a bit more in wealth, and spend a little more. Money is there to be spent.

I earn what I can, when I can. I just do my best to spend it wisely or in places that it really matters. It is not like I go without much of anything. I also will on occassion spend a large sum for something obscure or trivial.
Yes I can save all I want, and yes in the end I will die like the everyone else. When I do die, I will leave it to others. Still no reason to spend extra now. I like knowing I have enough for just about anything I would or could need. I also like being able to take some of the extra saved money each month and be able to donate it to various charities I like. I enjoy giving others gifts around the holidays or for whatever reason I see fit.

Stacey_JoinRightNow 09-09-2005 12:04 AM

I could save up and make other alternatives for food... but for my apparel... nah, I'll make sure it is well designed... hehehe

kmanrox 09-09-2005 12:17 AM

im not frugal even in the slightest... i guess im too goyim..i like to splurge...

Platinumpimp 09-09-2005 07:08 PM

Each to his own I guess. Some people see it as a goal to earn as much in life as possible, I don't see the point in that. However, there's no point in life either, so who am I to judge. Just do whatever makes you feel happy, like After Shock Media said.

phonesex 09-09-2005 08:06 PM
