How did ww.com aquire the domain ww.com and why doesn't www.ww.com work?

Two letter domains are allowed, so are one letter domains. Paypal started out as x.com. Also, www.ww.com works for me.

Wow, I never knew this and http://x.com still redirects to Paypal.
