Quebec scientist says HIV vaccine could be ready in 5 years
Last Updated Wed, 07 Sep 2005 07:36:29 EDT
CBC News

A Quebec scientist said a vaccine for HIV could be ready in five years. Rafick-Pierre Sékaly is the scientific director of CANVAC, a network for Canadian vaccine research.

* INDEPTH: AIDS

Sékaly spoke Tuesday from the AIDS Vaccine International Conference in Montreal, a gathering for scientists working for a possible vaccine for HIV/AIDS.

Sékaly's research focuses on reinforcing the way an immune system remembers a disease. If a person were vaccinated against HIV, this "memory response" should kick in if the person ever actually becomes infected.

* RELATED STORY: Lewis warns of 'carnage' if AIDS vaccine not found

"We want to understand how memory is made, what are the elements in inducing a strong memory component to the immunological system."

He said tens of thousands of vaccine trials are now underway across the world. And even if they only manage to find a vaccine that's partially effective, it could still save millions of lives.

"If you were able now in Africa to have a vaccine that's only 50 per cent efficacious, it will still prevent two or three million new infections per year."

Sékaly is chairing this year's international AIDS vaccine conference. It runs throughout the week.

nowadays if u get hiv and you arent in a 3rd world country, they'll have drugs for you that you can take so your aids dont flare up. Ask Magic Johnson.

Spunky 09-07-2005 06:54 PM

Sounds like a positive.Hopefully one day a cure will be found

Furious_Female 09-07-2005 07:54 PM

That would be nice, but I have lost all hope in modern medicine due to too much political and financial corruption :Oh crap

tranza 09-07-2005 07:56 PM

Magic Johnson does not have HIV anymore I think they did so many blood transfusions it cleaned his system out. Crazy how they don't talk about it much. makes you wonder

Money talks

Th!nk 09-07-2005 08:34 PM

HIV nowadays is very rampant. it's very good to hear that they are formulating another way of curing it...let's just think positively and hope for the best!

MrChips 09-07-2005 08:36 PM

Tough shit on the people that will die before then eh?

Lucky bastards? Dunno - but they will beat me to it - unless I get knocked down by a bus of course...

Back to the earth AIDS RIDDLED FUCKERS.

Magic Johnson's money affords him to take experimental drugs that are years away from FDA clearance.

A trillion blood transfusions would not be able to get rid of the virus because blood remains in all of our organs. Remember it just takes a drop of blood to infect someone.

Paraskass 09-07-2005 08:37 PM

There are things far worth than aids we should be worried about. Thank you media for blowing aids out of proportion.

Whatever they did it cured him 100% :) but your probably right about the experimental drugs

Does anyone buy into the theory that perhaps the drug companies have too much incentive to not cure diseases like AIDS. Does anyone believe that it was man made to control population?

Any conspiracy theorists want to make a prediction that a vaccine isn't possible?

JuiceMonkey 09-07-2005 09:25 PM

awesome news for sure

Party in Thailand in 2011! :winkwink:

Cash 09-07-2005 11:27 PM

I doubt Magic Johnson ever had HIV, it was media BS from him, otherwise his magical cure would have been the discovery of the century, and made available to more people, be it only rich, as you say ...

"There are very few developing countries in the world where public policy has been effective in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS on a national scale, but Thailand is an exception. A massive program to control HIV has reduced visits to commercial sex workers by half, raised condom usage, decreased STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) dramatically, and achieved substantial reductions in new HIV infections.1

Thailand, though, is also a reminder that success can be relative. Its well funded, politically supported and comprehensive prevention programmes have saved millions of lives, reducing the number of new HIV infections from 140,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003. None the less, one-in-100 Thais in this country of 65 million people is infected with HIV, and AIDS has become the leading cause of death.2

However, unless past efforts are sustained and new sources of infection are addressed, the striking achievements made in controlling the epidemic could now be put at risk. There is a need in Thailand to continue strong HIV/AIDS prevention and education efforts in the future, as well as providing treatment and care for those living with HIV/AIDS."

1:100 I like dem odds!

if that's true, that's 1%, that would be the same as the USA's HIV rate... so i still don't get your point?

SilverTab 09-08-2005 12:40 AM

Don't know where you get your information, but Magic Johnson still is indeed HIV+. And NO..he did NOT get a lot of blood transfusions..lol..where did you come up with that one?

Hiv not only is in your blood, but in your semen, your lymph nodes, and even in your brain. So even if you were to somehow, miraculously be able to give a person 100% NEW hiv- blood, that person would remain hiv+ because of the other areas hiv lives in.

He is on medications that gives an "undectable" reading of below 50 copies (of a mil of blood..the best our current microscopes can go) of hiv in his blood..but all it takes is one LOUSY hiv microbe to infect you.

Well, the real money is in treatment, not cures.

And we've seen the levels in which corporate executives and filthy rich will stoop to to protect thier billion dollar bonuses and yearly profits...

Doesn't seem too far fetched...

BastarD 09-08-2005 03:42 AM

Video-Post 09-08-2005 04:26 AM

Hehe whatever happened to those scientists who injected themselves with HIV to give hope to HIV positive people because they thought they'd have a cure in a few years? I guess they're all dead by now :1orglaugh

$5 submissions 09-08-2005 04:27 AM

Man, that would be nice if it pans out. Unfortunately, the recent vaccine tests failed. But there's quite a few countries trying out new vaccines so hopefully one will work.

bbe 09-08-2005 09:21 AM

A vaccine to a virus that mutates at something like 9000 to the power of 4 ? hahah good luck. You do realize that any vaccine will have a live strain right ? what kind of retard would volunteer for that ?

Magic Johnson is a MILLIONAIRE he can afford it. It's over $18K a year for those pills and you have to take about half a dozen or more at a time and you take them every 6 hours EXACTLY for them to work. Yeah what a "cure".

Ummm I'd just rather not get AIDS in the first place.

Oh by the way I have heard "AIDS vaccine is just 5 years away" ever since high school and that was 20 years ago.

warlock5 09-08-2005 10:54 AM

Better option -- get circumcized.

sexypond 09-08-2005 10:59 AM

finaly scientist invented drugs against the deadly virus
