Sponsors with Pre-Checked Cross Sales = fucking the surfer ?
 

does anyone else view this as a shadey/scammy practice?

having one or even a few cross sales that are checked by default on the join page.

i've seen join pages with like 2-3 pre-checked cross sales, thats pretty shadey IMO

why do you have it defaulted to be pre-checked ? I think you should let the surfer decide and not decide for them.

sure dumb surfers will join and probably not even notice it(more $ for you), but what about the ones that truely missed it, i'm sure it leaves them with a bad impression of the adult biz..

As a porn surfer constantly signing up for paysites, I have no problem with it. I just uncheck what I don't want and continue on in to happy land. One time I did voluntarily take an offer for a 3 day pass for a discount. However, I was highly disappointed because of the limitations placed on my account. I could only download certain parts of a movie, and the member area access was severely limited. Learned my lesson and never do that one again.

How about when a newbie registers a domain at godaddy and gets signed up for all kind of useless services?
Or when you order a book for the special price of $12.99 and then find out you are stuck into buying the book of the fucking month for the next 12 months or else they will ruin your credit...

there is no need to have it prechecked besides the fact that a lot of surfers probably overlook it and you will make more money.

The way I see it, it a surfer doesn't read what they are buying, then they deserver to get hit with cross-sales. I know when I use my credit card I read all of the fine print.

I agree with you about they should read all the fine print, but its still the fact that paysite owners SET it as default to be pre-checked.

IMO it means they know a lot of people overlook it and will join with the cross sales pre-checked, making them more money but fucking the surfer over in the end when those cross sales start rebilling at 39.95/29.95 or whatever a month.

There are good ways to do things that are a true value add, and then then are ways to do cross sells that are spammy and slimey. I would err to the side of legitimacy at all times. As a surfer you must always be aware of your purchases.

Caveat Emptor = Buyer beware.

Caveat Venditor = Seller beware. This is something that left wing consumerists live and die by. Disclosure and warnings and staunch regulation.

The answer is somewhere in the middle and it comes down to everyone being responsible for themselves.

ive seen a few sites with 3 cross sells all pre-checked but they were all done through their own merchant. paycom allows for up to 2 pre-checked xsells and to be honest the refund and chargeback rate for these is slightly higher than with no xsell at all.

At least with online xsells you get some kind of written warning, whereas those things on tv you buy you are often not told about recurring subscriptions.
