Does the US actually need aid ?

This morning the Irish government approved an aid package of $1 million euro to help the impoverished people in louisiana but straight away the radio shows starting buzzing with the talk that the US is one of the richest countries in the world and should we even give them aid ?

OldSchoolJim 09-06-2005 04:58 AM

I am sure they will be needing some $$ from us relatively soon...they are just laying the groundwork for it...i am sure we will be seeing a lot of this type of "lip service"

GatorB 09-06-2005 04:58 AM

$100 BILLION to rebuild means every man woman and child in the US has to fork over $3500. So I'd say HELL YEAH we need help.

Frank The Tank 09-06-2005 05:02 AM

thats peanuts to the states isnt it ? jsut kill some of the un needed military projects out east and thats the funds sorted

Trax 09-06-2005 05:05 AM

its not a thing of need or not
its a tragedy and it could happen to anyone
when you want to be helped in such a case you gotto help as well which is the main reason (to my mind) why countries donate.

XWS Negotiator 09-06-2005 05:08 AM

Every country in this world even the richest will need help financially if that kind of destruction hit, just imagine 100 million in damages

XWS Negotiator 09-06-2005 05:09 AM

sorry its 100 billion, he he he

A) where do you think "funds" come from? TAXPAYERS

B) yes politcians have shown willing to get rid of projects in their own back yards for the betterment of our country. That's why that overbloated highway bill got passed last month.

BRISK 09-06-2005 05:11 AM

Once a relatively poor country like Sri Lanka offers aid, it really makes a wealthy country like Ireland look like a chump if they don't offer some aid as well, whether it's needed or not. I think most countries offers are done mostly as a "keeping up with the Jones'" motivation than anything else. Does any country want to be the only one who doesn't offer some aid?

Frank The Tank 09-06-2005 05:13 AM

if that hurricane hit ireland there would be no ireland .. were smaller than one of your states

and im not talking about the principal of the donation - i agree with donating to good causes and to help people in need ... im just pointing out the current debate here :)

Need it or not, apparently providing it isn't entirely straightforward: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20050906/ts_nm/aid_eu_dc

Ughhh wrong... USA has 300 million people not 30 million. Its about $350 per person

350 x 300,000,000 = 105 billion

MacDaddyPlaya 09-06-2005 01:47 PM

Now that W is president and has run up a ridiculous deficit, we definitely need aid.

OK so a family fo 4 has to come up with $1400. Like people just have $1400 lying around. If countries want to give us money TAKE IT.

Dagwolf 09-06-2005 02:29 PM

Of course the U.S. needs aid, it just spent billions on an unjust war.

I'm not being sarcastic. Those people in Louisiana and New Orleans really do need assistance, and the U.S. can't afford it.

Roughly the price of the first year of war ... a piece of cake!

loverboy 09-07-2005 10:52 AM

its nice to see lots of countries extending sympathy to foreign victims
make you feel that there are indeed some friendly neighbors out there
still willing to share a hand despite political and cultural differences

You do understand how much we spent on the war right?

That's roughly 3 month's worth. If you go by official figures, which are dubiously low at best.

Maybe they should use the 'baghdad solution', drop a couple palettes of 100s off the back of a Hercules and just start handing out money to anyone who says they're gonna wander off and build/fix something. :thumbsup

Rhesus 09-07-2005 12:15 PM

Wasn't your military budget 600 billion per year during the Iraq war?
