don't know what it becomes but the acidity prevents bacteria from growing in it.

Forkbeard 09-05-2005 07:26 PM

It becomes sour, off-tasting vinegar with brown crud in the bottom. The crud is called "mother" because it's what you use to create new vinegar from wine (just like using yeast to make wine from grape juice). It is technically a yeast I believe, but I might be wrong about that; ask a microbiologist.

SquireMD 09-05-2005 07:46 PM

much of your answer depends on what type of vinegar (wine, rice, white, cane, apple, etc...)

jt420 09-05-2005 07:49 PM

It becomes window cleaner. :D

I love vinegar on my fries, with a pinch of salt & pepper. I also clean my jetted tub with vinegar, and wipe down my cutting board with it.

This is true, because:

Vinegar, is a sour liquid consisting mainly of acetic acid and water, produced by the action of bacteria on dilute solutions of ethyl alcohol derived from previous yeast fermentation. The coloring and flavoring are characteristic of the alcoholic liquor (as cider, beer, wine, fermented fruit juices, solutions of barley malt, hydrolyzed cereals, starches, or sugars) from which the vinegar is made. Vinegar may be started by the addition of mother of vinegar to wine or cider. The oxidation is carried out by acetic acid bacteria.

SquireMD 09-05-2005 08:01 PM

yes, but with no sugars, just acetic acid and water, no wine is made
