Expiring domain names question?

I'm looking at a domain name on directnic that says it's expired on 19-Jan-2002 but it's still registered.

When does the registrar actually release the domain so I can pick it up? Does anyone have an idea on what the timeframe is?

Thanks in advance

It's been in the news that they were talking about putting a 1-month grace period on expired domains. There was some controversy, so I'm not sure if it has or will happen, but I know it was being discussed.

I wish they had done that a month ago. I slipped and lost about 15 great domains.

Jamie, here's a great chart that illustrates the "normal" process. Although, keep in mind its ultimately up to the registrars and there are many of them. The registrar in particular that controls that domain name might hold onto them longer than usual. Network Solutions is notorious for doing this.

Most other registrars: expiry date + 40 days . For example: one of my domains expired 09-jan-02, today 19-02-02 was released to the public.
