Growing up in an area outside of Washington DC in prince georges county I have seen this attitude first hand most of my life growing up. Its the main reason I joined the Military and then never moved back there

It's sad how people on welfare think that everyone owes then somthing when in fact if they get off thier ass they could earn a living

It's not called "The Welfare Mentality" for nothing. It's why there are generations of people who have been on welfare. Sure, a few here and there escape it, but someone raised on welfare is more likely to be on welfare as an adult than someone who was raised to take care of themselves.

The hard working people of this country fund their pockets through welfare and other social programs. I for one am sick and tired of giving these fucks my hard earned money so they can sit on there asses all day, smoke crack, kill and murder and rob the hard working people in their communities.

after my mother got married to my father she found out about his involvement in organzied crime spanning the west coast. She took me at 2 months old and left him. Moving me to Ohio where she raised me by herself on welfare until I was old enough for her to start working.

Now, 27 years later she owns her own 5 bedroom house, drives a late model BMW and enjoys her job.

Not everyone on welfare are lazy trash. There are many examples of it's use truly helping people get on their feet.

Not to say you are all generalizing everyone on welfare as I know there are a lot of lazy people out there living off the government who feel entitled to every penny, but not everyone is.

I agree with you that some do get off of welfare. I was a welfare kid I remember food stamps to get groceries and subsudized houseing because we couldnt afford to live anywhere else.


But we are talking about people that live generation after generation after generation without working or paying a penny of tax in thier lives.

I consider myself liberal and I don't think there's any excuse for this behavior.
Welfare, lack of education, lack of any family responsabilty all lead to people acting like what we're seeing. One thing I noticed on the news reports is all the mothers with their kids, and you never see the fathers around. No role models to speak of other than thugs, no leader types, just mass chaos.

i, too, was a welfare child. my mom left my abusive father when i was a baby and raised me and my sister on her own. we struggled all our life and when i was 10 yrs old, things got harder, we went on welfare & moved in the ghetto. my mom held down two jobs AND went to college to become a teacher.

now, shes a successful teacher in North Carolina, by the beach (like she always dreamed about), driving a brand new convertable :)

and me? i'm a tough girl, i have street smarts AND book smarts, enough so that i DECIDED to be my own boss & never let someone else determine my future other than myself. :thumbsup

good people can come out of terrible situations. while others, choose to accept that easy street way of life. the point is, theres always a choice. :2 cents:

I had a baby at 17 and had to do the welfare thing while I was in school for a year. For whatever reason, I had to get a C average or above they told me. I thought that was odd since when I'd go there, there would be a bunch of fat lazy fuckers with 8 kids running around. I wasn't sure what they had to do for assistance.

Anyway I've struggled every since and STILL struggle... I've lost everything I own MORE THAN ONCE. And I can't imagine not working and not being valuable in some way. I have two kids now. I don't get a dime. I don't ask for a dime. I bust my ass. Plus I already see my parents aging and I know that it's pretty much me who's going to have to support them when the time comes.

Plus food stamps doesn't cover good wine at the grocery store. That's really the only reason I work. :1orglaugh

Truman had the welfare system set up so that people that were on it would still work.. maintaining parks, keeping roadsides clean.. yada yada...

He said something to the affect of, "I don't care if they just lean on a shovel handle, they're going to show up for work."

These people have the welfare system down to a science... They know just how to work it... If they would apply such an ability with a job, they'd probably do quite well...

Since anything I write is usually dismissed as hippie/liberal/communist, I will try a disclaimer: namely that my political views are generally pre-Reagan Republican/pre-Thatcher Conservative and on some issues, notably crime, I am somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun. If I come across as liberal, it is only because there is now a whole generation which uses such labels without having a clue what they really mean.

It would have been near impossible for me to think differently. My family was given land in England by William the Conqueror, along with the plum job of collecting taxes in the area. We did well enough, that come the Industrial Revolution, we owned most of a small town, its factories, shops and houses. Our fortunes went downhill somewhat in the early 20th century, but I still went to an English public school (the type which is really private) and when I was old enough to vote, it was unthinkable I should vote anything but Conservative.

The point is that if your family has made money from other peoples' sweat for 900 years and if you have any sense of history, one thing you see very clearly is that capitalism works best when the people at the bottom of the economic ladder have hope, however illusory. If you forget this, particularly if you allow too many people to gain so little from the system that they are effectively outside it, you do so at your own risk. Although the problems of Northern Ireland have their roots in the past, they still exist today because the Protestants didn't learn that lesson in time.

Judging by the majority of the sentiments expressed in this thread, traditional Republican/Conservative thinking that capitalism needs a sense of responsibility and self-preservation, is well and truly dead. But contrary to the bullshit being laid on thick and deep, we create the poor, they do not create themselves. They cannot go away on their own and for every exception which proves the rule, right now 2 or 3 are sliding down the economic ladder to take his or her place.

So you respond to emotive sloganeering and criticize the poor for not following your rules. Did you ever stop to wonder why should they follow your rules when doing so guarantees that most will continue to be poor? Just be glad they are still too busy screwing up their own lives and communities to notice that in many places there are enough of them to screw up other peoples' lives and communities.

Heads up! Most people do no more than cruise through their lives along the tracks laid down for them the day they were born. A few will do more and some less, but for the vast majority, the only difference between being able to enjoy middle-class smugness and being among the poor for whom they have such contempt, is that they are lucky enough to be running along tracks which started from a better place.

First off as an intelligent black man living having lived in America let me say this.
I have to discount a lot of this mans account because of the following:

If you go volunteer, you do it because you want to help people (POINT BLANK!)
You don't go to volunteer out of "curiosity" as he stated by his own admission

Also volunteering to get thank you's in reply is for lack of a better word "fucked up'

From reading his entry, I gained the following thoughts on this man
He wanted to go volunteer to see just how bad off these African-Americans were in their time of need.

He expected to be showered with thank you's from these "helpless and needy" Negro people, but when he was given too few. He felt disrespected because he walked into the door with a superiority complex.

And I for one can tell you, when you volunteer for charity work, you don't come in with the idea that you should be praised for what your doing by the voices of man (human beings)
